Default Halloween Horror Month 2016

Halloween Horror Month 2016

In 2012 I started doing my "Halloween Horror Month" where I try and watch at least 31 films in 31 days of October. Not sure what inspired it, but I had a lot of fun that year so have kept it up since.
This will be my 5th year doing it (see below the last day posts of '12-'15), so to mark that I thought I'd create a thread. I usually wait until October 1st to begin but I've been itching to start so I'm going to start today with "Fire in The Sky". Six days early, so this years target will be 37 films.

For me I'm not too strict in what qualifies, I basically just set the Blu-ray.com App to genre "Horror" and pick a film from there. Also means that there's plenty of variety, as you could be watching "Dawn of the Dead" one night and a comedy horror like "Beetlejuice" the next.
I've done Blu-ray (+ HD-DVD) for a couple of the years, but this year I think I'm going to pull from Blu, DVD, TV etc.

If this sounds like fun, feel free to join in.
My advice would be to not be too tough on yourself if you miss a day or three (life takes over sometimes), I inevitably end up catching up on weekends and shorter films like "Blood: The Last Vampire" can help in catching up.

______________

I'll update this post throughout the month.

EDIT:
Thanks to everyone who posted in the thread, I had a lot of fun this year (which may be obvious with #51 films watched). I hope everyone who gave the "horror film per day" a try had a good time.

See you next year for Halloween Horror Month 2017.

Done this for the last 2 yrs. As soon as I had this Halloween set, it kick started my now annual horror fest. I did the full set during Oct 2014.

Always start the month with one of these and finish the 31st off with another. (Might squeeze others in during as well )

October 1st - Halloween H20

First two days I've watched Jeepers Creepers & The Evil Dead.

Have Evil Dead 2 & Army of Darkness lined up for tonight. Between tomorrow & the 22nd I'm gonna pick & choose at random from Netflix & whatever I have lying around, then from the 22nd my list is:

22nd. The Babadook
23rd. The Descent
24th. The Witch
25th. It Follows (which I'll watch after getting home from seeing John Carpenter live.)
26th. The Cabin In The Woods
27th. Ghostbusters
27th. Ghostbusters 2
28th. Hocus Pocus (ok, its not a horror movie but it is a tradition!)
29th. Evil Dead (2013)
30th. The Exorcist
31st. Trick R'Treat
31st. Halloween

Cross-posted with the movies board, but this is where I'm at:

Right, let's get this show on the road!

thewerepuppygrr's 31 Days of Halloween Movies 2016

01. The Tomb of Ligeia (1964)
Directed by Roger Corman | Starring Vincent Price, Elizabeth Shepherd, John Westbrook

A man's obsession with his dead wife drives a wedge between him and his new bride.

Viewed on: Blu-Ray (Arrow: Vincent Price in Six Gothic Tales)

Runtime: 1hr 22mins

1st Time Viewing?: Yes.

My thoughts: This is the last in Roger Corman's psychedelic journeys through the works of Edgar Allan Poe and, to be honest, it is starting to show. This simply doesn’t display the same sort of joyously bonkers gothic camp as my personal favourites, The Pit and the Pendulum and The Masque of the Red Death. Still, there is a great deal to enjoy here, most notably one of Corman’s trademark trippy dream sequences wherein our heroine, draped in red, is stalked by a black-haired villainess. Price isn’t hamming it up quite so much here (which is a shame), but the set designs and true gothic English locations do up the aesthetics, and this is certainly a fond farewell.

02. Silver Bullet (1985)
Directed by Daniel Attias | Starring Gary Busey, Everett McGill, Corey Haim

A werewolf terrorizes a small city where lives Marty Coslaw, - a paralytic boy - his uncle and his sister - the narrator of the story.

Viewed on: Horror Channel (UK)

Runtime: 1hr 35mins

1st Time Viewing?: Yes.

My thoughts: I had an absolute blast with this one. You may not be able to tell from my username but I’m pretty big on werewolf lore, and this was one film I hadn’t had the joy of seeing. Fresh out of watching Stranger Things this summer, this was typical of that 80s mystery/horror vibe the show recreated so well. Plus, you know, Stephen King’s involved! I’m also a sucker for any horror that has a disabled protagonist as it means they have to be extra creative to get out of trouble, which creates a new angle to proceedings. There is a cheesiness here that can’t be avoided; to say the effects haven’t aged well would be a massive understatement, and some of the acting is bafflingly awful (see the scene with the mob justice for examples of both of these). Still, I’d definitely watch this again and hope to have it in my collection soon.

Total 1st Time Views: 2
Total Revisits: 0
Total Viewing Time: 2hrs 57mins

You inspired me DavesimonH, but I'm keeping to the commissioned art

Watched the Argento cut. Might squeeze in Day, my favourite out of these two changes all the time both so great. Might save Day until later in the month.

03. Blair Witch (2016)
Directed by Adam Wingard | Starring James Allen McCune, Callie Hernandez, Corbin Reid

After discovering a video showing what he believes to be his vanished sister Heather, James and a group of friends head to the forest believed to be inhabited by the Blair Witch.

1st Time Viewing?: Yes.

My thoughts: I’ll admit it’s been a while since I’ve seen The Blair Witch Project, but I remember it did freak me out for a good few days. The atmosphere of creeping dread and hopelessness it invokes is masterful, and its unashamed lo-fi grunge production values heighten the realism to unsettling levels when we witness the characters succumb to the sheer terror of their situation.

Almost 20 years on (and hurriedly sweeping a broomstick over the misfire that was Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2) the witch is back, and this time her victims have recording equipment and GPS devices that, while bang-up-to-date, still have a penchant for failing at the worst possible time. Earpiece cameras are set to make up for the shaky-cam memories of the past, and a drone camera is introduced as an interesting (though shamefully underutilized) addition to the gear. Other than that, it’s a bit of a snooze as we’re back to business as usual, albeit now with excessively loud jump scares that definitely can’t be second guessed as woodland critters having a rave in the woods.

It’s all a bit too slick, which works against it almost from the moment it sets foot in the woods. We don’t get a sense of that raw fear from the characters that the original gives us, since generally everyone’s just running around in the dark shouting each other’s names. Still, the third act at least offers something new to the table, including a sequence in a tunnel that captures the claustrophobic tension brilliantly. Plus, those little wooden stick men just got a whole lot more disturbing. It’s worth a watch but honestly, now that found-footage has lost its innovation gimmick, this is really just background noise in an overcrowded sub-genre.

Earlier ratings in this challenge:
01. The Tomb of Ligeia (1964)
02. Silver Bullet (1985)

Total 1st Time Views: 3

Total Viewing Time: 4hrs 26mins

I was horror-free last night but I've started on Night of the Demons (1988).
