Maybe its not PQ grain. Could be just some sand that the waves are kicking up!

I'm having so many 300 flashbacks!!

Doesn't your tv have an On/Off button for grain? I wonder if Warner did a Blu only release, would it still have the grain or is it from the HDDUD encode?

On one of the threads regarding this issue a couple weeks ago, some had mentioned that it looked that way in the theater as well. Grainy.

Ocean's 13 was also grainy in the theatre. It's Steven Soderbergh trying to be artsy. It he would stop shooting everything with DV cams then his movies would actually look good.

Remember... a movie shot in digital master cannot get any better by converting it to bluray. It will only get worse. The more detail there is... the more the imperfections come out.

As for 300 I confirm that it was very grainy at the cinema. It was done on purpose so the Bluray is supposed to be too.
I can't say for Ocean cause I don't have it

Cheers

They should have another warning on any high def movie box:

"Warning: this movie contains artistic elements that might affect the film's picture quality!"

Then at least it'll make people think twice before actually getting a title and expecting it to be all sparkly clear like Happy Feet since it's supposed to be in HD.

I don't know but the grain on 300 didn't bother me as much as on Ocean's 13, especially the scene where the chinese dude crawls into the elevator shaft...i saw "grains" GALORE.

The grain in 300 added to the look of the film and gave it that rustic, raw look for lack of better terms. Ocean's 13 and all the Ocean's films look like absolute crap! They are all blurry, terribly grainy and out of focus way to often. To intentionally add grain to enhance the movie is one thing, but I find it hard to believe the director wanted his movies to look like garbage in this case.

there needs to be an official

"this movie is grainy! wah!"

and then

"but it looked that way in the theater, you fool! directorial intent!"

thread.

i'm personally very happy with ocean's 13 as is. it looks exactly the way i remember it looking in the theater.

300 use grain to hide CGI withc is 99% of the movie... otherwise it would have looked like Kong King, witch you absolutly don't want to because it look as bad as 1976 version for the 'Fake' kick LOL after LOTR i tought Weta was good enought, but i guess not, worst CGI + Human EVER!

This is the reason why I joined this site! I got both 300 and Oceans 13 for Xmas and the second I played them, they looked extremely grainy.

This is also very disappointing. We are all paying top dollar for Blu-Ray technology, however the films look poor. And to think I actually thought there was something wrong with my tv.

I believe this is the very reason why some movies are having the grain filtered out for high definition releases. The new breed of film watchers can't and won't understand that the grain is there by the Director's choice.
