![]() I'm telling you, I finished Alien³ last night (and by last night, I actually mean half-hour in the morning). Anyway, I prefer the ending in the Assembly Cut. I think Ripley's sacrifice feels all the more powerful with the alien still inside her. It's a brilliant scene either way, though, largely due to Elliot Goldenthal's score. |

I prefer the Special Edition.
In the Theatrical Cut her body just fades out...there's no contact with the lava...it looks ridiculous: ![]() The special effect in the Special Edition is far superior/more realistic: ![]() Also notice that Ripley's body is calm before she jumps. There's absolutely no sign of the baby queen alien trying to burst out. |

I prefer the SE ending. I think the chestburster still being inside her makes her sacrifice more powerful, as you're left thinking she could maybe have had a chance of living, but she didn't want to risk it and have the Aliens get into Weyland's hands. According to the TC ending she was on the verge of death either way, and if the conversation had continued just a bit longer it would've burst out right there in front of them.

Theatrical, because the SE mangled the excellent music score during that scene and I like the alien bursting out. I will say this though, if there was any way to digitally enhance that SE Ripley falling into the molten steel to where it looks more like her holding the alien down and put that into the overall TC ending, then it'd be perfect. I agree that the lil tiny body falling into the lava looks bad in the TC.

I never really thought the endings were that much different. I liked them both about equal.
![]() If I had to pick though, I'd probably stick with the assembly cut. If for no other reason than I did find it a little trashy and silly to have the chestburster pop out while she was in midair, whereas in the other version it seems much more elegant. |

The problem with the chestburster queen in the TC is that Ripley's descent into the furnace is extended way too long. And it cuts between a slow-mo falling Ripley to close-ups of the chestburster clearly not in slow-mo. It kind of stretches time (and credulity) in an almost comical, 70's kung fu movie way.
