![]() Skate Kitchen Director: Crystal Moselle (The Wolfpack) Camille's life as a lonely suburban teenager changes dramatically when she befriends a group of girl skateboarders. As she journeys deeper into this raw New York City subculture, she begins to understand the true meaning of friendship. ![]() This movie is a modern day, coming of age, more hopeful & optimistic version of Kids. You have young people skateboarding in NYC, filled with drugs, sex, alcohol, and mischief. |

Saw this last night and absolutely loved it. Wasn't until I came home and did some research that I found out this is basically a pseudo-documentary. This group of girls that all skate together aren't actors. They weren't rounded up for the movie. This movie came about because the director found these girl's Instagram page (@theskatekitchen), ran into one of them on the train in NYC, and asked if they wanted to make a movie.
So, the skating is real. The girls are real. The friendships are real. The locations are real. But it's a scripted, fictional story with a handful of "real" actors in supporting roles. Jaden Smith as a fellow skateboarder, and Elizabeth Rodriguez (Orange is the New Black) as the lead's mother. This movie was just a joy. Ahh, to be young again. Skateboarding. Hanging out with friends. Working meaningless cashier jobs. Getting into trouble. A few bits of dialogue that was a tad cringey, but it's definitely authentic to the culture and lifestyle. I'm just a generation removed from these kids. Definitely brought back some major feels from my youth. Highly recommended, and love supporting films like this. 4.5/5 |

This jumped to the top of my to-watch list as soon as I saw the trailer in the theatre. Got a strong Kids-vibe, which is one of my favourite films. Definitely looking forward to seeing it.

Thought this was very good. The New York world is represented extremely well and the film is shot organically. I love the dialogue; it's unpolished and sincere. The plot is mostly good. I think there are some weaker aspects involving family drama, but it doesn't weigh the film down too much.
I am quite fond of this type of film/world: inner city, aimless kids, rough around the edges, nihilistic atmosphere. (e.g. White Girl, James White) |

Have you seen Tramps? It's on Netflix, and was in my Top 10 of last year. Should fit your description nearly perfectly.
