There are three that could qualify in mine. Two were controversial in their day but maybe not so much now (The Exorcist 1973 and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974).

But there is one that takes the cake. It irked many people then and I suspect those same people are just as irked with it today.

I present to you, a best picture nominee from 1991...Ladies and gentlemen...

I can almost hear the mix of applause with tomato-throwing boos...

Not really controversial now, but it's from pre-code Hollywood times, so before any type of censorship. Can you believe Barbara Stanwyck has sex with men to get what she wants?!

It's a good film except for that. I'm not usually bothered by racial stereotypes in movies -- it's just how it was -- but you can't watch it without wondering "Who on Earth thought THIS was a good idea?"

Yikes! It looks like Silence Of The Lambs won Best Picture that year. JFK was nominated though. It looks like I got some editing to do...
