Default The House on Haunted Hill(1999)-20th Anniversary

I can't believe this underrated gem is turning 20 this year. I still remember when I duped my mom into letting me rent this at my local blockbuster back in the day. Lol I believe it's the first time I ever duped her into letting me rent a r rated film lol.

Everything about this film is a treat. From the production design to the casting. All top notch. Not to mention a ****ing smoking hot Famke Jensen.

It's a shame it's not more appreciated in the horror genre.

Anyone else enjoy this underrated gem????

Absolutely! I'm a big fan of mood and atmosphere, and this film is certainly moody and atmospheric. It's got some issues (one casting decision was very unfortunate), but overall it is a terrific haunted house movie. I'm glad I saw it on the big screen when it was released.

I would of loved to have seen this on the big screen. I really hope it gets a re-relesed on the big screen for the 20th anniversary.

This was a lot better than I expected when I finally saw it about five years ago. I thought it kind of went off the rails in the third act (I recall a really bad CGI ghost monster of some kind), but up until then I was really digging the atmosphere and thought the cast was pretty good. Geoffrey Rush even resembled Vincent Price at times.

Since this thread is a celebration of the film, I'm not going to say. In all fairness, this person was less horrible in this than the other projects I saw them in.

@Michael24 the "ghost monster" you referred to, while not great, was not created by CGI. The CGI in this movie is very minimal, according to interviews with the effects team in FANGORIA.

Do you have a link to that interview? I would love to read it. There's not much out there on this film sadly.

Computers were definitely used in the creation of the ghost at the end of the movie. How else do you think all of those images are composited together.

.
I'd be surprised if it was anyone other than Chris Kattan!

The movie has always been one of my favorite horror flicks. It has one of my favorite uses of a song in a movie (Marilyn Manson's Sweet Dreams was perfectly used in this movie) and i actually just bought the score to this last year as iy has always been one of my favorites.

Hopefully the new Shout! Special edition blu ray drops in price soon

The CGI ghost monster is actually pretty cool when you look at it closely and realize it's constructed entirely from naked female bodies

There was image composition long before visual effects teams were using computers. According to an interview with director William Malone, the tentacular morphing mass of ghosts featured at the film's climax was designed by KNB Effects, and was inspired by the visuals of H.P. Lovecraft's novels, as well as resembling the Rorschach inkblots used in psychiatry. According to Malone, much of the visual elements were actually not computer-generated, and were actually made up of footage shot by the production crew, which was grafted together to form the mass. (Info taken from a link on the Wikipedia page for this movie.)

Someone mentioned I must have hated Chris Kattan. Nah, he was great.
