This is a cool idea but...

Drunken Master needs tender loving care from a company that
are fans of Hong Kong Cinema and willing to go the extra mile to make sure
all goes well.

Not just slap whatever transfer Sony hands them on a bluray...

So many things to go wrong.

The Sony HD master used on the Japanese bluray for this is awesome picture wise but the sound is not the
original Cantonese it's a strange mix & def not the original mono mix!!

Now all these companies will tell you the original audio is gone!! Not true!!

Just to lazy to find it... it's actually complete on the French DVD!

Now let's look at the English dub... The English dub used on the current Sony DVD is also not original it's an all new dub....

All the classic voices from the 1978 English dub are gone!! This is a BIG no no!!!

Don't even get me started on English subtitles for this release!! I'm sure they won't go out of the way to have someone come in and do a REAL translation!!

Drunken Master is a film Twilight Time should not even consider touching!!!

Not an idea because it is really happening (at some point) and Twilight Time is releasing it and the rights holder obviously had no intent in releasing it themselves and nobody else apparently wanted these films. It happens man.

Can someone ask Twilight Time if they've also licensed Full Contact (Chow Yun Fat) from Sony?

Wow really? This could be another title that could generate buzz for selling out. Drunken master, and Snake in the eagle's shadow are Jackie's first big films!

I agree it does sound like a Shout release. Its a shame if it doesnt have the original classic English dub from the UK VHS, I love that dub

Why? Shout has not treated any of its Hong Kong movies with respect. They even went so far as to claim the Fortune Star stuff were not upscales. And don't even get me started on the Bruce Lee debacle. If Shout would have released these movies, they would have just crammed them on one blu-ray with their crappy encoding. At least Twilight Time will give each movie their own blu-ray with a high bit rate. People are crazy if they think Shout would have put any more effort into the blu-rays than Twilight Time. I'd love for a HKL type company to release them but the sad fact is no such company exists anymore. The only companies treating these movies with respect and giving them lavish releases are the japanese companies.

Does that mean only 3,000 released? If that's the case then it will be a mistake. TT could slap the worst version of this on a disc and there will be enough interest in the title alone to sell out. They'll still come out ahead.

Twilight Time almost always does 3000 pressings only, some films warrant 5000 pressings but no more than that.

And Twilight Time will encode to disc whatever Sony gives them. They continue to do that just like Shout! did the same for the Fortune Star titles. Well, for the Bruce Lee films they tried to color correct them; except they corrected the wrong masters.

Also, as far as I know, Sony has not licensed to Shout! yet. A Sony property is either going to be released by Mill Creek, Twilight Time, Criterion, or (if its lucky) Sony themselves.

For Mill Creek, there was only one release with an extra and it was an archival extra.

Twilight Time has included extras but nothing newly created either.

Criterion is allowed to make new extras thankfully.

And well, Sony also sometimes makes new extras for their releases.

Drunken Master should be a good release but I doubt Sony is going to allow Twilight Time to source other elements for it. I also doubt TT would even look for better elements.

Isn't the fight at the beginning cut by a few minutes everywhere? (I didnt know that until I read a comparison). So I doubt we'll ever see the full version.
Could TT be given access to the French DVD audio somehow?

On the Japanese bluray sourced from Sony's HD Master, the original Cantonese audio is missing in places throughout the film.

The speaking dialog is all there but when there are fights in certain places through out the film the yells and reactions are sourced from the newer English dub audio track.

You can also tell the audio is off right from the start of the film as soon as that awesome music kicks in, the audio gets strange and the music drops way too low... this also happens a few times through out.

The French DVD put out by HKVIDEO has the complete original Cantonese audio & correct music levels it also sounds GREAT!!

Damn it - I would love to upgrade every one of my Jackie Chan collection to blu-ray but not at £30 a pop.

Why oh why can't Arrow release his movies, then they would get the treatment they deserve

I will be keeping my eyes on this release...

Interesting. Snake in the Eagle's Shadow is fine though, right?

For those concerned about video quality, there are caps here of the transfers TT will be using:

http://www.caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergl...ch=jackie+chan

Not even close to an FS style upscale. These TT discs should be the very best Blu-rays of Jackie's films available with English subs. Everything else is dire.
