Getting a used Kuro, should I? - Blu-ray Forum

Ive been searching for a new TV lately. My current TV is a simple 2011 Vizio, 720P. It's nothing special at all, but it works. I am getting my taxes back soon and I was thinking of getting the M43 C1 with 4K and local dimming. I really want something other than an edge lit Led which is all I've ever really had for a long time. The M43 is only 500 most places so it seems like I very good deal for what you get, and in my experience Vizio isn't much less reliable than any name brand (in fact probably more than Samsung).

But recently I was discussing getting a new TV with somebody at work and they told me they have a 50in Pioneer PDP 5080HD and they said the would sell it to me for 300, perhaps even 250. Sounds like a great deal as long as the thing has no burn in issues, he says it still works very well after nearly 10 years. I haven't seen it yet but he said I can see it myself before I get it sometime. I've never owned a Plasma but I had a friend who had a Panasonic Plasma long ago and I always loved the picture and wanted one ever since, and Kuro is the king of all plasmas so I'm really considering it.

I'd like to get some other opinion though, I'm not totally sure what to do. Its the difference between having 4K and only 720P, but with all the other Picture quality advantages of Plasma I'm not sure I care. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated, thanks

$250-$300 would be a good deal. Then later on you could get a 4K OLED or 4K projector.

Congratulations! with the money you are talking about the Risk versus Reward ratio is very low. I purchased a used Panasonic plasma VT-25 almost two years ago for the insane price of $600 dollars, and i love it. If I keep the set for another three years my cost of ownership is $10 dollars a month. By then I will invest in a 4k tv, and they will be much more affordable, with more selection.
I see people spending a fortune on all this new gear, which is great if you can afford it, but tv's are like cars, the depreciation tables are crazy bad!

I'd do it at that price all day long. I own a Kuro that is 9 years old and is now doing duty in the bedroom...... the picture is still fantastic and looks like it did on day one. I think you'll be very happy at that price for the amount of quality you're getting.

I have the 5080 Kuro. Still spectacular! Get it! No one has ever noticed that it is 720P.

I am probably going to do it, I'm just a little timid because I've never bought a used TV before. But I know Pioneer is known to last long and have great build quality.

When I go to look at the set, what else should I look for besides burn in?

Depending on the number of hours on the set, that does seem like a pretty good deal. I spent 5k on the PRO-111FD back in 2008 and it still looks beautiful, although I have noticed the red blacks issue that affects many Kuros after a certain amount of time. If anything, the 5080 would make for a nice secondary TV.

If there is burn in that is only seen by very close inspection don't worry about it.

Does anybody have any kind of advice on little things to look for besides just burn in? I would say I am more tech savvy than the average person, but that aint saying much. Im sure most of you guys know a lot more about tech and tv stuff than me.

Just think about buying a used car as is, and its repercussions! Buying a 11 year old HDTV, (that's not being manufactured anymore) is a risk, regardless how good Pioneer Kuros were, and you don't know how often, nor the duration of time the TV have been played over a 11 year period, which is a long time. So If you decide to purchase a Kuro, you will be buying it without a warranty, and most likely you'll be buying it from a private owner, not a retailer because retailers no longer have them in stock. It's not guarantee that a service repairman will be able to get replacement parts, and if so, it's going to cost you an arm and a leg to get it repaired, when something goes wrong with it.

Well Ive decided on going with the Kuro, assuming when I go to check it out everything works great. I should have it by the end of this weekend.

And the 5080HD is only 9 years old, not 11. Still a while though and you have a good point, and I was worried about that myself... but really I think I only need it to last another year (or at most 2) because I ultimately want an OLED. I'm not the kind of person who buys a new TV ever damn year but I will make an exception in this case. The KURO's are said to have 100,000 hours and thats like over 20 years at 8 hours a day. It should have a few more years, and if by the time I save up enough cash for an OLED its still working maybe Ill movie it down stairs and put in the living room for my grandparrents and everyone else.

Like I said your risk to reward ratio with what you are spending is so low, you would be crazy to pass this up. You will know in what shap the tv is by it's general appearance, which should be good. You could always bring a couple of Blu-rays with you, and watch a few minutes on the set to test it out. good luck!

How are the blacks on the 5080HD by todays standards? Not counting OLED, just all Plasmas that have come since. I know the blacks were praised like hell at the time but these days most of the praise goes to the 9G Kuro's and the ZT60 from Panasonic. Does the 5080 still have great, or even above average blacks by todays standards?

8G Kuros had excellent blacks.

Good call, my cousin has a 9 year old elite 50" with heavy usage and not a single problem....ever. No plans to go to 4k for at least another 3 years.

By then the 4k sets ( oled ) will be much cheaper, and there will actually be enough content to utilize the resolution. To each his own...

I just got the TV and brought it home. Nothing seems wrong with it so far but it had a few smudges on the screen. One part of the screen almost looks like it has grease or something on it. It came with cleaning cloth. Is there any special trick to cleaning the screen?

You have to be very careful when you're cleaning a plasma screen, and different manufacturers recommend various instructions on how to clean their own particular product. I've located the owner manual for you to upload to give you instructions on how to clean the screen, in case the seller didn't include the manual with purchase. It can be very informative overall. Just click on "Manuals & Brochures" to upload the manual. The cleaning instructions is on page 8.
