Lightbulb The Ernest P. Worrell Appreciation Thread

Hey Vern! I figured I’d make a thread where we can discuss all things Ernest! I love all things Ernest, even the DTV sequels. In fact I’d go so far as to say anything Jim Varney (RIP) is in I have enjoyed to some extent. My favorite Ernest film is Goes to Jail, loved the setting and I thought him playing the hero and villain worked out perfectly. I grew up with it on VHS and remember playing that tape over and over every time I went to my grandparents house. Hope to find some more Ernest fans!

I saw "Ernest Goes to Camp" when it first came out and absolutely loved it. I think I've watched it once every five years since. The first four "Ernest" films were all wonderful entertainment and the original Varney film "Dr. Otto and the Riddle of the Gloom Beam" was good as well. With "Ernest Rides Again," I think things settled down into a comfortable (but still entertaining) groove through the conclusion of the series. It was always nice to know there was a man like Ernest P. Worrell in the world.

LOL what the hell...just earlier today, for no good reason, I googled what the cost of the Ernest Scared Stupid Blu-ray is going for these days, since it's a treasured piece of my collection.

I watched and enjoyed, to varying degrees, all the Ernest films as a youngin'. But Scared Stupid will always hold a special place in my heart; it's the only one I go back to as an adult, and my nostalgia for it is through the roof.

As an October baby who can't get enough of Halloween, this is just such a perfect movie to watch that time of year...fun for adults, with just the right amount of spookiness for kids. And the opening is an absolute montage masterclass, and can be played on loop in the background of any Halloween party.

Ernest Scared Stupid is still one of my favourite Halloween flicks. Such an entertaining film and Jim Varney was in top form. Neat looking practical effects in it too!

I haven’t seen any of the Ernest movies since I was a kid and I enjoyed them then. I wonder if they would hold up as an adult.

You know, they do! At least for me, maybe it’s just the nostalgia talking but damnit what a great actor Varney was! Kind of sad that he got pigeonholed into being ‘the Ernest guy’ but damn he had some acting chops.

Here’s a link for the Ernest P. Worrell preservation society https://epwps.libsyn.com/

Also if anyone ever wanted to learn more about Varney this book is really great as well! https://a.co/d/auGtwkI

Gone way too soon!
I would have killed to see Ernest and Mr. Bean do a bit together.

Always thought it would be awesome if these two had made a film. Gone far to soon!

Ern was a unique character. He even had a TV show.
I'd have to learn how he got his break into TV and movies.
His name is Ernest, not Vern, right?
He only lived to age 50. Died in 2000 from smoking.

Rewatched all the Ernest films last year and the only one I'd want to own is Scared Stupid. I had a decent time with all the Touchstone films, but that one was tops. It's such a perfect Halloween movie that it's a shame it isn't readily available for people who want to watch during spooky season.

I love the Scared Stupid credits song. In fact the Ernest/Ghostbusters On Our Own mash up is my favorite.
