Default Medea (Pier Paolo Pasolini) 12/6/11

Medea Blu-ray

Medea Blu-ray Review

Preliminary release date: December 6th.

Quote:
Based on the Greek classic by Euripides, Pasolini's Medea tells the tale of Jason, the leader of the invincible army, and his quest for the Golden Fleece. Meeting the priestess of the Flees, Medea (Callas), Jason falls in love with her and takes her home as she sacrifices everything to be with him, including dismembering her own brother. Years later he spurns her for a new love, the young and beautiful Glauce. Medea, using her witch-craft powers, exacts a terrible revenge upon Jason leading to a terrifying climax where loyalty and betrayal are tried before the altar of human sacrifice. Opera legend Maria Callas stars in her only dramatic film role ever. Restored and re-mastered from a new 35mm film-to-tape transfer.

wow, looks pretty cool. lol.
don't know anything about this particular Pasolini film, but I saw the play one time in college.
seeing Callas in a film role sounds intriguing for sure.

It's a 'PG' cert in the UK?! My intrest has dwindled. Shame on you for not making a version that would have to be cut at '18', Pasolini...

Isn't this that ridiculously sadistic, nightmare-churning movie that got banned in most parts of the world? it got an X18+ in Aus, yep, it got the rating WORSE than R18 (the NC17 american equivalent) and if it makes an unrated cut in the US i'll definitely import it!!

if true that only makes it a definite purchase for me--I love collecting banned films. They are some of the best.

No. That would be:

...which was banned for quite some time in your neck of the woods.

I have no idea if there's an ongoing joke here that I'm missing, but NO.

The description you give best matches 'Salo', which didn't get an X in Australia (a rating reserved for non-violent porn) but which was banned on THREE different submissions (with a brief window of being unbanned between about 1993 and 1997) with the harsh RC (Refused Classification) rating. The ban was finally overturned last year with a weird ruling that allows it to be released on DVD and Blu-Ray, but only with the provision of three hours of extras to give it proper historical context - Salo is still banned from being screened in Australian cinemas. Yes, weird.

'Medea' on the other hand got a fairly light M rating in Australia (which would fit a PG-13 in the US) and has been out on DVD for years.

So you're thinking of the wrong movie (Salo btw is coming out on Blu from Criterion in the next month or so) - 'Medea' is a good movie, and I'm looking forward to the Blu, but anyone who gets it expecting a horrorshow that will push their limits will be VERY disappointed.
