Won't have the chance to see everything I would want to until April at the earliest, but I'll try and piece something together and revisit it when I've reached the end of the year.

I'm missing 'Best Animated' and 'Best Foreign' Jabbercash. Hucksta G fixed it.

I'll post my list before the summer. Have a lot of catching up to do.

I didn't include Best Animated, Best Documentary, or Best Foreign Language film as I hadn't seen enough to fill any of those 3 categories. I only saw 2 animated films, 3 foreign films, and no documentaries.

You didn't like her in Arrival?!?

Surprised that Silence made cinematography and adapted screenplay but nothing else for you. What did you think of it overall?

Fixed, thanks. Don't know how I messed that up.

I thought she was fine in Arrival and I thought Arrival was a fine, competently done film. The overblown praise it's getting is mystifying to me. I only made that note so that people don't think I typo'd, given that Arrival has all the steam this year, and also to clarify it's not some kind of "she was in lots of great films this year so I'll give her the nom" thing; I think she earns the nomination in Nocturnal Animals alone.

I thought it was a great film, or at least nearly great. If I had a full list of ten nominees for Picture, it'd probably be on it. However, it can be between 5 and 10 (which is something I know is controversial, but I actually agree strongly with that system and hope it stays in place forever). And the eight I picked are all above a certain threshold of quality that the next few films on my list (Silence among them) don't quite attain. There's just some parts of it that are a bit plodding. But the cinematography is excellent, and the screenplay itself was great. Honestly, the direction was great too, it nearly got a slot in that category for me. But, on the whole, the film is slightly less than the sum of its parts for me.

For the sake of interest, you can compare that, to, for instance, In a Valley of Violence, my #3 of the year and a film I love, which did not really excel in any category (certainly its direction specfically is not worth a nomination), but it just works and winds up being a great film, much greater than the sum of its parts.

I loved Arrival, but I see what you're saying. Your nominations for In a Valley of Violence are very similar to Hell or High Water for me. It's one of my favorites of the year, but somehow didn't make that many categories.

Yeah, it only got a screenplay nod from me (and two for best supporting, if you include my overly long list). But even there, while they were both a lot of fun, I thought Gil Birmingham is super-underated in that film. Bridges is great, but really just being Jeff Bridges; certainly, the chemistry the two of them had only worked as a two-man affair. So I prefer Gil. Also,
[Show spoiler]for some reason Gil dieing feels "off" to me. It seems that Bridges should have been the one to die, that would have fit the film better imo. That's more of a screenpaly criticism than an acting one, though, I guess.

I rewatched Moonlight, and absolutely loved it on second viewing. I've added some new picks and changed the order
