So its rumored that Sony is prepping a new model if the PS4 with UHD BD support, a GPU that 2x the power of the one and the current PS4, and possibly a better CPU too for $400-500. Theres no way I was going pay $400 for a stand alone player, but if I can sell my current PS4 and upgrade to this one for a littke more I would definately make the jump.
Thoughts? |

It wouldn't surprise me at all if the updated PS4 had a UHD BD drive. Sony already knows from experience that they can obliterate the console market by including the latest disk drive, probably moreso than any other feature they could include.
It also wouldn't surprise me even a tiny bit if this has been their strategic decision for a long time, and is exactly why they aren't releasing a stand-alone player with everybody else. the think about PS4 is that they CAN sell it at a unit loss, because there is a TON of downstream revenue to be made. Games, rentals, PS+, digital content. Even if I exclude the games themselves, in just 2 years of having my PS4 I have definitely spent more money on content than I did on the console itself. |

Just saw this news today on Youtube.
AMD's original PS4 chip was fabbed @ 28nm. They skipped 20nm for desktop GPU. Now they're at 14nm and the power consumption has decreased by a very large amount claimed by AMD. FPS should go up along with HDMI 2.0 support and HDCP 2.2 for this newer PS4 slim, but rumors say by fall I heard. VR is supposed to launch October 2016....probably that time or a little before. I have no idea if the CPU runs any faster... Might be a way to counter Nintendo's NX or a newer MS XB1 slim. Either way at least it's more support for 4KUHD. ![]() |

why would Sony prefer something they push out for free, when they can release an updated console that will get a LOT of current PS4 owners (myself definitely included) to plop down another $500 for a new console.

Well with Sony fairly lukewarm about UHD BD to begin with and the fact that they are launching their own Ultra streaming service tomorrow, leads me to believe that the upgrade will be streaming only. It would be great if it were disc too though, but seems too much to hope for.
If it does come with UHD BD playback, then it would help a lot. HDR streaming is gaining a lot of momentum now and UHD BD needs more than a couple of expensive players on the market to compete with that. |

I just bought a PS4 a day or two ago. Traded in my PS3 and scored the 4 for around $140. The only thing that would interest me about this is, like the rest of you, it supported UHD discs. I certainly don't want to spend $400 on a player alone, but $500 for a player, and a PS4 that will upscale my games to 4K could be neat. Would want to see some real world results first, though.
edit -- I would imagine that this device would replace my Roku 4 as well, which would offset the cost a bit more. |

I actually laugh a lot to myself when the console people think that it will be a true 4K resolution on the gaming side. I have a Nvidia GTX 980Ti ($650+ GPU alone) and at 3840 x 2160 with all high or max settings, I hover around 40-45 FPS in most AAA games. There is no ****ing way that even a PS5 could match that and cost less than $500. They're still using an AMD APU (CPU and GPU in one), and even the PS4 as it is is struggling to do true 1080p, upscaling most of it content from a 900p or sub 1080p source. As a visual spectacle gaming console? Lol.
PC Elitist aside, if the PS4.5, PS4K or whatever they call it, that I'd believe they'd reveal at E3 or just before, includes a UHD drive with HDR capabilities, HDMI 2.0a port (at least one), they can sell it for $500-$600 and I'll buy it. I have always used a Playstation as a movie player/streamer first and gaming console third-- Second is a place to hold Blu-rays until I sort onto shelf. |

As I understand it, the PS4K wouldn't come out till the end of the year or later.
At this point, that's not really 'on the radar' for most people. I don't think Sony will even get into it at E3, since they probably want to focus on VR. The funny part, for me anyway, is that it will only upconvert games to 4K. 4K is starting to get a bad rep as a marketing gimmick due to all this upconverting. Any good 4K TV can already upconvert your movies and games for free. Last edited by Frank@Chicago; 04-04-2016 at 02:07 PM. |

What's not funny is Sony splitting it's game hardware and creating performance problems on the PS4.
Nintendo did that with the regular 3DS & New 3DS, and the New one didn't sell that well. Then they put out a game that runs on both systems (HW Legends), except the 3DS version runs like crap. If Sony does that with the next GoW game and the PS4 version runs like crap, there'll be hell to pay. Sony needs to think very carefully about what they do next... |

If it has an UHD disc player, then this product is perfect for people like myself who are PlayStation/console gamers and are moderately interested in upgrading to UHD blu ray.
Even disregarding new games, I would be so happy to play GTAV, Bloodborne, Uncharted 4 and a possible Red Dead Redemption remaster at silky smooth 60fps and 1080p. Just please give it a 1TB hard drive. |
