Yep. Too bad it won't enhance Shatner's acting!

They've already been airing the Remastered episodes for three years now on late-nite syndicated on the digital affiliates, so some of us (non-HD'ers) had the chance to preview them ahead of time--
They look pretty darn GOOD.

Not a "Pride & Prejudice" level of TV film-negative restoration for hi-def, but about the best the industry had as of a few years ago.
The New effects won't throw anyone off who's used to TNG and Enterprise, and in some cases, they're a marked improvement.

You forgot these comparisons, btw:

I don't see myself buying the series but I'm glad they're doing this for the fans. I got introduced to Star Trek with the movies and I've never been able to watch the horrible effects of TOS (early TNG is pretty bad too). Cheesy acting is the other problem but that's something you love or hate (again early TNG is pretty bad too).

Getting that set next week, grew up with Star Trek as a kid, still awsome show even with the cheesie lines, bad acting and cheap FX. I would rather watch this then some of the shows they put on these days like CSI, ER, Law & Order, reality TV, 24, Lost........Give me captain Kirk and his crew anytime.

I hate the new music for the opening credits, it sounds totally hollow, but since the mono mixes are included, this should be a must buy.

I have to admit looking at the extended galleries I'm tempted to buy, definitely rent, having never seen TOS.

If you can get past the lame pop-culture jokes about Shatner's acting (and no, he never did "make it with a green-skinned alien female"), stop and consider historically where the show was in 1966:
Gene Roddenberry sold the show to NBC as, quote, "Wagon Train to the stars" because, in the 50's and 60's, Roddenberry was one of the more in-demand western TV writers working at the time...
If you've ever come across one of Gene's "Have Gun Will Travel" scripts, Paladin could out-PC-lecture Kirk any day of the week, and twice as self-righteously on Sundays.

If you can just watch the episodes fresh, you can see a little bit of the "revolution" that got mainstream folks out of the 60's--If you weren't at Berkeley, most folks' first counterculturalist idealism was through either the Monkees, Tolkien, or Star Trek:
Not as overbearingly PC as Next Generation, but definitely an attempt to get some sense of progressive moral outlook across, in an age when "Lost in Space" was getting better ratings with the flying-saucer kiddies.

The only thing I don't like about the remastered version is the completely unecessary new theme song... WHY? It's not that different but it's still a head-scratcher.

If this set was below $50 I would pick it up in a heartbeat. Anyone think the set will go down in price as time marches on or will it remain high?

The MSRP on the first Star Trek box sets (Next Gen was first, then DS9, then Voyager, then finally TOS) didn't go down until years later. Next Gen came out in 2002 with a MSRP of $130 I think and it didn't go down to $70 until 2006 or 2007. I find it very ironic that the upcoming set, which is easily the best Trek season set ever released in terms of quality and features, will be the cheapest one I've ever purchased.

Actually he did, well at least it was implied being Star Trek is not a porn series. In the "Gamesters of Triskelion" Kirk's Thrall trainer Shanah was a "green skinned alien." Quite hot IMO.
