Default !!Happy Birthday Star Wars!!

39 years ago today Star Wars invaded theaters, and there is no denying the world was hooked.

A fleeing rebel princess, a scoundrel pilot, a farmboy yearning for adventure, an evil dictatorship with a world destroying laser beam, a turncoat ex Jedi on life support.

Where were you when this behemoth was unleashed to the world?? Did you experience it in cinemas??

Thanks George for creating an amazing Galaxy far, far away.

As a 90s kid, the first Star Wars movie I saw in theaters (and in general) was The Phantom Menace.

And I love it.

I wasn't quite two years old. I did see it in a rerelease at the theater before Empire came out.

Geez, you guys are young! I was a junior in high school on this date.

Despite what people might assume now, this wasn't a big deal AT ALL. Star Wars was just another new movie that no one had heard of -- far from being a sensation. No lines at theaters. All that came later as word of mouth spread over the summer. By the time I saw the movie with my friends that September there were long lines and lots of fans, but on this date? Nada.

Fun fact: the original STAR WARS came out 39 years ago today, yet the entire sweep of time covered by all six George Lucas movies -- Episodes I - VI -- is only around 37 years.

Interesting. Cool to think it built up steam over time and wasn't hyped up before.

Meh, I beg to differ. You were older than I was and probably had more on your mind than spaceships, as a junior in high school. But as a six year old kid with a Star Trek-loving older brother -- both of us avid readers of STARLOG magazine -- this thing was huge from the beginning.

Yup. My parents (who were mid-20s at the time) have told me their story before. They were looking for a movie to see one night and saw Star Wars on the marquee, which they'd seen a couple ads for on TV. My dad was like "Oh, that's that movie where they're fighting with laser swords or something. Wanna see that? It looked kinda interesting." They parked, walked right up to the box office, bought their tickets and got a seat all within mere minutes. When they went back a couple weeks later to see it again with my grandparents, there was a line around the whole building.

I was born in December '78 so until the '97 Special Editions I only ever saw the first two on VHS. The only original one of the trilogy I saw in the theater was Return of the Jedi when I was five.

In honor of Star Wars' 39th birthday, TheForce.net posted this amusing (if for no other reason then completely missing the boat) review, published in the June 20, 1977 issue of New York.

https://books.google.com/books?id=Qu...page&q&f=false

Last year New York's Vulture.com posted a annotated version from the review's writer, John Simon, based on a conversation it had with him about blockbuster cinema.

Wow! I feel very old right now.
I was a freshman in high school when Star Wars opened in theaters and stood in those massive lines with friends/family several times.

I was born in 73 so I was 4 years old when I saw it. I still remember seeing it in the theatre. It was a life altering experience for a 4 year old!
