Default In the Soup Restoration/25th Anniversary Re-Release -Kickstarter-

In the Soup Film Restoration and 25th Anniversary Blu-Ray Release!

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...5th-anniversar

edit: Successfully funded as of 8/9/17

From Kickstarter:

In The Soup is an acclaimed independent feature comedy by director Alexandre Rockwell. In rich black and white, it's the story of an aspiring young New York filmmaker (Steve Buscemi) in the throes of his creative struggle, his beautiful neighbor and muse (Jennifer Beals), and a lovable con man (Seymour Cassel), chasing their dreams in quintessential 1990s NYC amidst a cast of oddball characters played by Stanley Tucci, Sam Rockwell, Will Patton, Jim Jarmusch, Debi Mazar, Carol Kane, and others.

In the director's words, "it’s a zeitgeist film that captured a moment in New York independent filmmaking when anything was possible."

Pledge $100: Get a limited-edition, large softcover bound book for Soup's 25th Anniversary. It'll have a brilliant intro by Alexandre Rockwell, never-before-published photography, and a beautiful, rich, reprinting of the director's original, annotated copy of the script, so you can walk through the creative process page by page. And, it'll have one more remarkable thing enclosed: the first ever 'In the Soup' Blu-Ray! So, you can watch the newest release of 'In the Soup" - which wouldn't exist without *your* help - in all the ways, digital and on Blu-Ray, while reading about it in this commemorative 25th Anniversary Book. Oh, and, for Kickstarter backers, it'll be signed with gratitude by director Alex Rockwell.

The last day to back this project is August 30, 2017 5:00pm PDT.

It's still going on till the end of August. It ends 8/30. It looks like 3-4 people pledged over 20 grand yesterday alone to fully fund this

That's because they offered a $15000 level where you get dinner with the cast and director.

I'll wait for the Blu to buy on its own. The price level to get a Blu copy is too high, IMO.

Wow...you have to pledge $100 before you can get the blu-ray?! I might have considered for half that, but geez. I trust that since this is already fully funded, there will be a release further down the line that I can buy for less. Until then, I'll hold onto my DVD.

This makes me wonder...anybody know what happened to Rockwell? He was part of the 1992 Sundance gang with Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi), Quentin Tarantino (Reservoir Dogs) and Allison Anders (Gas Food Lodging). They became friends, the four of them made "Four Rooms" together, then Tarantino became TARANTINO, Rodriguez has had his share of successes, Anders did "Grace Of My Heart" and has done a whole bunch of TV, and Rockwell just kind of faded and it seems he never reached the kind of success that his friends/counterparts did.

I knew he was married to Jennifer Beals for a while, so that's definitely one for the win column, but I was curious if anyone has seen any films he's done since "In The Soup".

Those are some cool rewards. Everything from Steve Buscemi voicemails to dinner with Steve Buscemi and Jennifer Beals.

I bet Tarantino was one of them. Though he wasn't happy about losing the Grand Jury Prize to Rockwell, the two did become friends afterwards and Rockwell appeared on the Reservoir Dogs 10th Anniversary DVD.

Don't be surprised if a new 35mm print runs at the New Bev in the near future (possibly paired with Reservoir Dogs or another 1992 Sundance entry).

I agree, there definitely should be a lower level pledge just for the blu-ray. According to the guy running the kickstarter, around 70% of the money raised is going just to restoration of the film. I'm still waiting to hear back if there will be a standard blu-ray release. Should be a given since they're already way past their goal.

I was thinking the same thing, if not Tarantino then someone similar or possibly even Steve Buscemi himself, considering he's quoted as it being one of the best independent films of the '90s. Plus I'm sure Buscemi would want to help save a film he was a part of and seems to be very proud of. I hope the new 35 mm print goes on tour for those of us not in NY or LA. Would love to see it on the big screen.

According to the kickstarter page, he's the head of the film directing program at New York University's graduate school. Not sure for how long though. I haven't seen any of his work post Four Rooms but plan on changing that in the foreseeable future.

The following was posted in the FAQ section of this project:

Q: Can I buy one-off rewards, like the Blu-ray, later?

A: Short answer: Almost definitely. We are looking into good ways to add on individual rewards that weren't part of your reward package at the time we send out our backer survey. Stay tuned.

And then, most rewards (like the t-shirt, poster, and Blu-Ray) are being made just for the campaign, but if there are some left over from our order, we'll be selling those via the Factory 25 website after backers' orders are fulfilled.

Also new stretch goals have been added when the project hits $78,500: the first ever In the Soup vinyl soundtrack and the preservation of Rockwell's 1983 debut feature Lenz.

Alexandre Rockwell's 1983 feature, Lenz, is a loose adaptation of German writer and revolutionary Georg Büchner's novella of the same name, which in turn chronicles the life of writer Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz (1751-92) and his gradual slide into insanity.

The film was shot in the true grit of 1980's New York's Lower East Side with a cast of non-actors in true low-budget indie fashion. It premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and screened at the London Film Festival, but it has never been distributed, and has never been formally screened in the U.S.

I sent them a message saying that they would probably get a lot of donations if they offered a Bluray option at a $50 price point.

The response: "Thanks for reaching out and your suggestion. We'll chat about it and get back to you soon."

New stretch goal of $98,500 to create a new documentary on Seymour Cassel to go along with the film restoration/blu-ray release.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects.../posts/1964935

Quote:
Huge news day. We've far surpassed our goal for saving and re-releasing In the Soup, and we are so so close to the soundtrack and Lenz stretch goals. But in speaking to the cast and longtime fans of this film and of Rockwell, one name keeps coming up: Seymour Cassel.

Today, with the support of Seymour's children Dilyn Cassel Murphy and Matt Cassel, friends, and collaborators (including the In the Soup cast), we have a new stretch goal:

Let's make a mini-documentary as a tribute to Seymour

I'm proposing a new project on top of what we've already accomplished: Let's make an eight- to twelve-minute short documentary film about Seymour's life and career, and distribute it online and along with In the Soup's re-release. I outline the budget and rewards I propose below, but first, a little about the man himself.

.
Seymour, who is a true independent spirit, made his film debut in John Cassavetes' first film, Shadows (1959).

Nine years later, after making a name for himself as a character actor, he was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in Cassavetes’ Faces. He continued to collaborate with Cassevetes throughout the director's life, and he went on to act in many studio films — Dick Tracy, Tin Men, Indecent Proposal and Honeymoon in Vegas to name a few — while keeping true to his indie roots with roles in Steve Buscemi’s directorial debut Trees Lounge, as well as Wes Anderson's Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.

And as we know well, he blew minds and won hearts in In the Soup, not to mention winning the first Actor's Award ever given by Sundance for that performance.

What drew me into Cassel’s world was Cassavetes, but his loyalty to indie cinema is really everything that Factory 25 believes in… He had once said that he would be in any independent film for the price of a plane ticket if he liked the script.

He was the real deal, and getting the chance to make a short film about him really excites me as it will be the perfect lead-in for In the Soup in theaters. It would be such an honor to do this in collaboration with Seymour's family, friends, and long-time collaborators and for all of you, and for Seymour(!), to see it when it's done.

Anyone know for sure if the BD will be pressed? Hate to spend that much on a BD-R.

I asked Matt Grady, the creator of the project, if the blu-rays would be pressed and if any copies would be available for sale outside the kickstarter. He replied,

The Blu-ray will be pressed and will have a few copies for sale on the Factory 25 site after, if we have any left but wont be signed.
I'm just hoping something behind the scenes doesn't happen to cause the blu-rays not to be pressed, like with The Atomic Brain kickstarter. Though this kickstarter has way more cash flow so hopefully it won't be an issue.
