Default What is 5.1 - 7.1 Ratio?

Okay... call me I-D-I-O-T...
We're now seeing 5.1 ratio to 7.1 ratio. We have 5 speakers, and I'm assuming if we had 7 we could take advantage of 7.1 ratio?
Again...

you got 5 speakers, your reciever most likely only decodes 5.1 (5 speakers). in order to make the upgrade to 7 speakers you are going to need a receiver that decodes 7.1 sound. adding more speakers to your current set up will not get you 7.1 sound. to get 7.1 you need a source (the movie, and ill tell you right now most of them are only 5.1), a receiver to decode the signal from the movie, and the speakers themselves.

true...with exception of some receivers like a Yamaha that Crackinhedz was talking about a few weeks ago with his BurrBrown DACs haha(j/k)

There are some receivers that will take a 5.1 signal and mix it into a 7.1 setup. but for the most part, yes, you want a 7.1 source for 7.1 sound.

5.1 and 7.1 are not ratios. Simply the amount of speakers in a setup.

5.1 = 5 speakers + subwoofer
7.1 = 7 speakers + subwoofer
9.1 = 9 speakers + subwoofer
11.2 = 11 speakers + 2 subwoofers

It is actually the number of channels of sound encoded. It should match the number of speakers you have but it is not required.
