The film was a true disappointment for me. Maybe the ratings set my hopes too high (French people are not used to give their cinema good ratings). In the end it's just pure entertainment, the story goes way too fast for its own good. There is a handful of good direction ideas here and there but they're all ruined within a few seconds.
However it's not a disaster, and if you're not looking for something intellectually challenging or aesthetically mind-blowing, then you'll probably have a good time. Don't expect seeing anything that hasn't been done before in better movies, though. |

Anyone got this yet? Gagging to know what the presentation is like seeing as we're unlikely to get an English friendly 4K anytime soon.

Got mine yesterday and watched it last night.
Great blind buy - immensely entertaining with gorgeous production design, cinematography and costume design. All around great performances. The film at a near three hour running time flies by. Highly recommended. |

Yes, it's one of the best movies of this year.
Wish there was an english- (or german-) friendly 4K disc. |

None with English subtitles. Same as for the two part Three Musketeers which was from IIRC the same producers and Pathe. Pity EiV got the UK rights as they really are the lowest common denominator for BD. No extras and locked on / burnt in English subtitles to stop you getting a clean picture.

Was going to get the 4k version from amazon.fr but went up in price so am waiting to drop down again. As long as there are subs online that I can drop into the player I should be OK. Didn't like the steelbook for this one, the design of the standard 4k is much better (complete opposite of the steelbooks for 3 musketeers).

The French 4k Bluray has a Dolby Atmos track. Unexpected, but firsts few minutes has cool spacial audio of the bit I have watched so far. Only descriptive french audio track. Works well when translated to english with SubtitleEdit.

Slightly technical.
I use https://makemkv.com/ and then use "https://www.nikse.dk/subtitleedit" to extract, converts and translate subtitles. I also use it to generate subtitles with audio to text. If you want you could write back to a new Blu-ray disc. The film. I put mine on Plex. |

Just got round to watching my french 4k avec English subtitles. Film looks beautiful, some really nice cinematography, and costume design was decent although sadly lacking on the ridiculous hair and clothing of the 1830s that I was hoping for. Changes were not too bad overall (really do not like Edmond/Haydee so alternative Haydee pairing not too bad) but I feel that some of the major omissions on the Villefort storyline removed the turning point for Edmond's redemption and therefore weakened his character arc, and the sword fight at the end is always one of my pet peeves in all the adaptations it appears in.
I wish I could find a Monte Cristo that hits all the right notes but sadly am still looking. This made it a bit further than some and it's the first one I remember where Eugenie Danglars gets to be her canonical lesbian self, so bonus points for that. However, if your experience is only with the English language versions then this is a significant step up from most of those. |

If the timing is correct with the video, you could mux those together and burn a new disc. Luckily, I have an Oppo, where you can play a disc and get your subs from a usb stick. |
