I would love some studio/label get hold of this and do a complete audio/visual restoration. Apparently George Orwell's wife had it withdrawn from circulation because she didn't like the adaptation. I have a terribly rough UK dvd from a US tv print that has the less down-beat ending. It would be great if they could find the alternate one where Winston Smith is killed too.

Yup, me too! Apparently, the book went out of copyright last year, so the George Orwell estate can't block the release of the film anymore. I'd love a great looking transfer of this (both endings please). There's a few copies of this film on YouTube, all looking a bit ropey, but handy for listening to Malcolm Arnold's fantastic title music, a real overture.
