Default David Brent: Life on the Road

I'm a huge fan of The Office UK and of Gervais during 2000 - 2007. From what i can discern from the follower teaser, this seems to be close to that golden period.

First teaser trailer:

Love the office. I think they made the right move not having any other returning characters. Everything was resolved so very well in the tv show. Nice to see Jo Hartley (Shaun's Mother In This Is England) as well. Bring it on.

I don't see that happening. Derek is out on Bluray though. Another good show from Ricky Gervais. Not quite as great as the Office but not far away either.

Yeah, agree. Although I wouldn't be averse to seeing Chris Finch appear. I'm not sure if he and Brent are still mates, especially since the events of the Christmas party (in the final ever episode) where Brent had a few choice words for him.

Hopefully, this films turns out better than the Alan Partridge film. It wasn't a bad film at all, but it wasn't the Alan from the original BBC series of 1997 and 2003.

I thought the Alan Partridge movie was one of the best comedies I've ever seen period. It was my favourite movie of 2013. Lifetime fan of the character too. Horses for courses I guess!

I didn't even know about this. Hopefully it's good. I thought the ending of the UK Office was perfect(I don't count the US Office appearances by David Brent as canon), so this better not undermine that.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it a fair bit. But there was something that was a bit off with how the character was written and performed.

One thing that does concern me is that this doesn't involve Stephen Merchant. I think Gervais does his best work when he collaborates with him.

Surely you mean Alan from the original radio show On the Hour of 1991. Or the Alan from the original Knowing Me, Knowing You radio show of 1992. Or the Alan from the original BBC series of The Day Today from 1993? Or the Alan from the original BBC series of Knowing Me, Knowing You in 1994 and 1995..?

I sort-of get what you mean though - I disagree that it's not the same Alan as I think the character was carried over perfectly. The thing that threw me off first time around was the tone of it being a film and the differences in style that meant. It made Alan stick out a bit in such an unfamiliar setting. Still, I enjoyed it and a rewatch only made me love it more. Certainly better than the hugely disappointing League of Gentlemen film (but not up there with the king of British sitcom film versions, In the Loop).

On the Road looks like it may work better than Alpha Papa thanks to it keeping the same style as the original show, something which makes a lot of sense and can work as well in a more long-form format as it did on TV. I'll miss Merchant as co-writer but it always seemed clear that Gervais did the bulk of the Brent character.

That's true. Also, the final episode hints that Brent had finally started to see the light but it looks like he is back to his cringe inducing worst!

I thought his original cameo was great but the job interview stuff didn't work for me. The Comic Relief short that Gervais did in 2013 was brilliant and a good sign that he can still do the character justice.

I don't usually got for films based on tv series but this looks cracking. David Brent is easily one of my top comedic characters of all time the other has been mentioned in this thread before, Alan Partridge.
