(Incidentally, as dark as it is, the 1939 version has a happier ending than the book. In the novel, both Quasimodo and Esmerelda end up dead!) Last edited by charlieray1; 02-06-2015 at 11:23 PM. |

I need to read the book and check out that original ending. I love how brutal it is. ![]() |

A classic, one of the gems from Hollywood's golden year, 1939.

I LOVE this movie - does anyone better informed than me know what the odds are of a UK blu-ray? I really hope someone picks it up for Region B release.

Not great: the RKO library is owned by the BBC in the UK, and they don't have access to the negatives which is why so many UK releases of RKO titles on DVD are poor standards conversions or from very old TV masters. It didn't even get a DVD release until 2014, and then from Odeon, who aren't exactly fussy about the quality of their RKO titles.

Oh how I wish this would get a grand release rather than just a plain keepcase... but I'll take what I can get. This is absolutely a day one purchase for me as well...I would also be thrilled to see Warner release "The Canterville Ghost" on Blu-ray.... Charles Laughton delivered a sympathetic and endearing performance in that film as well.

I'll be buying this great movie individually for $15 instead of in the boxset. Very pleased another Charles Laughton film is on Blu-ray! Now just waiting for Rembrandt and I've no idea who has the distribution rights. Of course and more movies of his on the format.
