Watching the visuals in The Last Jedi, especially, got me thinking of the OT themselves -- Firstly how George Lucas is out of the picture that we can be rest soundly he can't mess with the OT anymore! BUT secondly, having seen how amazing the CGI is handling creating that nostalgic OT feel while still looking polished, epic, modern as possible...
Here is a "what if?" for you all to rabidly debate, counter with your own preferences, or dismiss as folley; **OT theatrical re-release concept** -- After the main saga is over and the Rian Johnson trilogy and standalones continue, say in 5 or 10 years could the world embrace a CGI/fx updated OT? It's plausible they could put $100M easy into each to totally update with CG around scanned OCN elements for cinema re-release? One per year. Dolby Vision. 4K native CGI. Immersive audio... The whole smash. Potential billions of $$$ on that investment in theaters. My argument for this path from Disney is this... I don't want them to reboot star wars OT storylines just to make it modern and make money, and I think most purists would agree -- But I'm a realist and they won't be able to resist to cash in on the OT brand. Maybe sooner than we imagine -- [Show spoiler] Most importantly discarding all the horrendous Lucas changes 'n' tinkering in the process.Caveat: Lucasfilm/Disney does the purists a solid releasing the UOT on home video for them and for posterity in UHD quality -- This is to me a 'best of all worlds'. Youth today can really get into the OT in a fashion they're used to. Disney can make a billion on it or more. We can all head off a cringy reboot reality WHILE getting whichever version on UHD we want...or both. |
