Generic answer, but probably the eighties.

80s was the best, 2000s was the worst (harder to think about).

The 80s, just for Fatal Attraction. A more terrifying movie there has never been.

The '70s for quality, the '80s for quantity.

You had a pet rabbit as a kid, didn't you?

As to the question at hand, I'm not sure. But off the top of my head, I'm going with the 1990s. There were a lot of really fun horror movies in the 90s. And my favorite horror movie ever, Scream (and its sequel) was in the 90s.

So, I'm going to stick with the 90s.

Tough call between the 70s and 80s.

1970s:

Jaws
The Exorcist
Suspiria
The Omen
Alien
Halloween
Dawn of the Dead
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Phantasm

1980s:

American Werewolf In London
Angel Heart
Evil Dead II
Re-Animator
The Beyond
Creepshow
Company of Wolves
Nightmare On Elm St
The Fog
Tenebre
The Fly
Videodrome
The Thing
Inferno

to name just a few...

Worst decade? 21st century output has been mostly disappointing.

80s have to win, without the 80s you don't have the slasher genre you do today.

What about those '70s movies that laid the groundwork for the '80s slasher, Black Christmas and Halloween two obvious examples?

Hell, the '70s proto-slashers are a hell of a lot more well-made!

Honestly, I'd have to disagree. The New French Extremity was a great trend and also influenced a bunch of other great New European Extremities.

Plus amid the mire of endless torture porn, there were some solid films in there.

Plus a bunch of the remakes weren't too bad.

imo anyways

~

In my own opinion, I'd say the 90s are the worst (sorry Aaron), and also the decades between the 1923s and 1950s (inclusive). I know there's a lot of Universal Monsters and Hammer fans out there, but as far as I am concerned, there was not much going on, certainly compared to what the Germans were doing in the 1920s, or what was able to be done with the breakdown of censorship in the 1960s.

I will say Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the Omen are quite iconic, however so are Jason Voorhees and Freddy Kruger.

I agree with this. There has been both a new, extreme direction as well as throwback stuff like It Follows. It's been an eclectic century so far when it comes to horror.

I THOUGHT WE WERE FRIENDS!

No, seriously, I knew that would be an unpopular opinion when I posted it. But those 90s films, those are the ones I find myself going back to the most often.

I do agree with your statement otherwise, as it pertains to the late-20s through the 50s.
