Question Sailing Movies - What Else is there?

I've been trying to search for more movies that feature sailing vessels, line-of-battle ships - i.e., along the lines of the Armada, Francis Drake, triple-deckers. I'm glad I found Master and Commander, the movie was excellent and I await the Blu release - but what else is there, even if on DVD? I don't know where to begin to look.

And PotC doesn't count.

JJ, this isn't going to answer your question directly - but have you read the series of books by Patrick O'Brian that Master and Commander is based on? If you are interested in the Age of Sail etc. it is amazing stuff - lots of historical information, written in an entertaining style with love and a sense of humor.

1492 seems like I should look into it - directed by ridley scott.

But Dead Calm - not so much.

Haha, actually I have quite a few of them! The Age of Sail along with WWII are a few pasttimes of mine as a history buff.

But I sure would love to see another movie or two.

Captain Ron is not on blu ray but it is funny and take place in the caribbean. You could probably find it cheap.

Along the same lines of Master and Commander although not the same quality as it was a BBC/A&E special not a full motion picture, is the Horatio Hornblower series on DVD, based on novels by CS Forester.

Yep, as a small boat sailor, I loved Master and Commander--eventhough it's bits and pieces of about 12 of O'Brian's books.

For PQ and humor, Captain Ron would be a hoot on BD. Love the scenes when they have all sails up--wow. Plus, Mary Kay Place in the shower--that's a nice touch, also.

Ridley Scott's White Squall with Jeff Bridges was pretty good as well.

Everyone seems to be forgetting about "Wind". It had Matthew Modine and Jennifer Grey and was about Yacht racing. Hopefully, this is being looked at for Blu release soon.

Not exactly "line-of-battle ships - i.e., along the lines of the Armada, Francis Drake, triple-deckers", but this is a film that needs to be restored and seen again. The narration is very dated, but the cinematography is great and there are good musical moments.

EDIT The Bounty and both Mutiny on the Bountys are on DVD.

But having seen the "true-story" Mel Gibson/Anthony Hopkins "Bounty" version, you won't want to bother with the lesser two...Rent immediately.

(Forget that Hannibal cartoon-character, Hopkins rules any movie where he can play insecure authority figures watching their control crumble--Think "Nixon" and "Titus" on the high seas.)
