DISNEY VIEW feature

Has anyone discovered this new feature that seems to be available for all Disney blurays with a ratio of 4x3 or Standard box? Many of Disney earlier films were not in wide screen, and when played on a wide screen tv, you can expect black boarders on both sides of the screen.

Many people dont like these boarders, and many might attempt to stretch out or distort the image to fill up their entire screen. BUT, the bluray release of several of these have a new feature called DISNEY VIEW. This is a new way to watch these films in the original aspect ratio while the animators have ADDED painted boarders to each side of the screen instead of black bars. the images will slowly fade into new images throughout the film, and the colors, textures and designs will change to match the scene it accompanies in the film.

This is like having wings on a stage. It FRAMES the sides and fills up your screen without cropping, or distorting the original image.

I only just noticed this with the recent release of Alice in Wonderland, and I fell in love with it. While I dont want to stretch out the image, I hate having the black borders on each side. So this seems like a fair compromise for viewers like me.

This same format is available with Pinnochio, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Bambi.

What do others think of this new feature? It is available to turn off for those who dont like it and would rather have the black boarders, but for people like me, I think it's AWESOME!

I wouldn't exactly call it new, but it's nice they give people an option. I personally don't care for it, though.

It does look very nice though I'm concerned it could be very distracting while watching a movie.

I personally hate and like them, hate them cause the do lead to distractions in while watching a movie, then i like them cause they make the picture of the movie more artistic and all. I personally have only tried it with the new Alice in Wonderland movie and not the others.

I can see both sides. When I first started watching THE PASSION with subtitles, it was distracting at first, but after about 15 miutes, I got use to it and ended up appreciateing the original language.

Same here. At first I found it distracting because it was new, but after about 15 minutes, I got use to it and it blended right in.

+1. The best part about it, however, is that it's switchable; it satisfies both those who absolutely MUST fill the screen (without the abominable picture-stretching effect) *and* those who are OCD about OAR.

Pandering...but better than cropping...

Either way, lame. I've never watched a 4:3 film with Pander-Crops or Pander-Fill. Don't think I ever will.

How is The Passion's presentation of historical languages foreign to American soil somehow unreal? Of the film's rare non-controversial credits, the attempt to present historical figures speaking in the languages they *probably* used is chief among them.

(Uh, believe he was referring to "real" foreign films like Seven Samurai and Breathless, where people *definitely* speak Japanese and French. )

And we've only known about DisneyView for, oh, two years now...
Although it hasn't been as well used since Pinocchio and Snow White--No one's been able to cross Toby Bluth's borders.

My wife likes it, but I find it a bit distracting. As others have said though, it's better than cropping/stretching to fill the screen.

It's a cool feature. However I can see how it would be distracting. I will have to try it out on Bambi.

I never noticed it till recently. And I evenr OWN Snow White and Pinnochio, I just never noticed that feature. I finally noticed it with Alice in Wonderland and heard the were doing it with Bambi, so I started looking into it more and made the discovery.

I tried watching Fantasia with it on and had to stop about 15 minutes in. It was just too distracting.

I have also checked them out on every Disney movie that has had them. While I think they are attractive, I dislike the distraction from the movie. Give me black bars any day.
I know there are some who, for some reason, can't get past the black bars. They seem to "see" them more than the movie. Personally I see them as nothing - especially in a somewhat darkened room. If you can't get past the black bars, I guess DisneyView is your best option. Everybody wins.

while i don't use them myself, i like the way Disney presents the pillars. it's a very classy presentation because it reminds you of MOVIE halls of the past, where they had a single opera house dedicated to showing 1 single film and it was very pompous and high end and classy (dress up and stuff). so those pillars remind of all those older theaters. which was how lot of these classics were shown when they debut originally.

You guys must not be able to focus very well or something. I've watched all the disney releases both with and without it and none of them have ever distracted me from the actual movie itself, just something nice to spice the screen up a bit and fill it all out. Makes no difference on or off to me since what I'm actually WATCHING is still the same AR.

I thought that too, but I did not find it distracting at all. Kind of like the Dark Knight. My 6 year old loves it. Further, for some reason, my plasma has lots of trouble with the pillarboxes fading the image, so it really gives me a level of comfort. I also find the artwork to be very good, so I am a huge fan of this feature.
