Default Hell or High Water (2016)

http://deadline.com/2016/05/hell-or-...er-1201753956/
Quote:
The bank is about to foreclose on their momma’s farm, and her boys don’t have the funds to thwart it. Seems there’s just one solution to raise the necessary capital: Rob a bunch of that bank’s branches. Enter a Texas Ranger who is about to retire but “may have one hunt left in me.”

Here’s the new trailer for Hell or High Water, which premieres next week in the Un Certain Regard sidebar at Cannes. Jeff Bridges is the foul-mouthed lawman out to solve the string of hold-ups perpetrated by brothers Tanner (Ben Foster), a hotheaded ex-con, and Toby (Chris Pine), a divorced father with no record.

Gil Birmingham and Katy Mixon co-star in the drama from director David Mackenzie. Sicario scribe Taylor Shirdan wrote the screenplay. The pic is produced by Sidney Kimmel, Peter Berg, Carla Hacken and Julie Yorn and exec produced by Gigi Pritzker, Bill Lischak, Michael Nathanson, Rachel Shane, John Penotti and Bruce Toll. CBS Films and Lionsgate open Hell or High Water on August 12.

Just now hearing about this after the high praise it received at Cannes. Definitely looks good!

This movie is bad.

It's very flat, very dull, very boring. And I'm a man that loves slow paced films. This film wasn't even slowly paced. It was moving right along, but it was still boring.

Constantly racist jokes towards Native Americans and Mexicans. Really really bad dialogue. A pretty bad script overall.

Turns out it's the same screenwriter that wrote Sicario, which is another film I didn't like. I think it's getting safe to say I'm not a fan of Taylor Sheridan's writing style.

Really wanna see this for Pine and Bridges, have seen the trailer in front of a couple movies I've been to recently and it looks like The Town meets No Country for Old Men. Not the biggest fan of Sicario so using that as a selling point won't win me over, but the actors are all good or great, and the setting/story have me intrigued (although the trailer gives a little too much away, as usual).

Honestly, the only thing I can compare it to, is as if The Ranch on Netflix was turned into a feature length film.

It caters HIHGLY towards white, southern, older Conservatives.

If you're a 60+ year old Republican that lives in Texas...you'll love this film.

Some of the dialogue and phrases used were so cliche, I honestly thought it was a parody film at one point.

"If I find him, he'll find the short end of my rope."

"If I catch him first, he'll be field dressed on my hood."

Really, really, really bad stuff. Cringe-worthy.

Disappointing to hear it's not so great, will probably go ahead and wait for BD unless I get REALLY bored and it's cheap at my theater

(Which btw happened to me with The Infiltrator this past weekend, which ended up being quite enjoyable, if nothing great.)

I don't give a crap about "PC" stuff as listed above. These are characters in a movie, not real life.

What I do mind , however, is Jeff Bridges. What has happened to him? Ever since TRUE GRIT, he's turned into this parody of Sam Elliott with his gruff, hard to understand, mumble-voice and mannerisms........... ENOUGH!!!

That was in FULL force for this film. His line delivery was just abysmal. He's honestly turned from The Dude into Mr. Lebowski in his old age.

The live Q&A stream after the film was pretty entertaining. Everyone was super drunk and just rambling on and on about nothing. Chris Pine lit up and started smoking a cigarette inside the theater.

Interesting you didn't like it. I know critics reviews don't mean shit, but this has a 100 percent there.

I'm thinking maybe this movie might not be as divisive as one member makes it sound. Way too many great reviews to ignore, I'll surely be checking this out.

...or at least tone down the "Yosemite Sam" speech patterns.

Still, this looks worth seeing to me.

Chris Pine Says ‘Hell or High Water’ Is About Men’s ‘Failure to Be Intimate’.

Quote:
“It’s a completely different film, I don’t know where to start!” Pine said Wednesday night at the movie’s Los Angeles premiere at the ArcLight Cinema Dome. “It’s a whole different criteria to work with. In ‘The Finest Hours’ we played adversaries, in a way, and in this one we play brothers with a long history. So it was a completely different dynamic.”

“It’s about the failure of men to be intimate and vulnerable when they desperately want to be. But they just don’t have the language or the facility to do so. That was the big draw for me,” Pine said. “To hear the voices that kind of congress together and see how it depicts people’s anger and frustration is very illuminating for me and powerful for the social conversation.”
