Default Stupid Question #356789

In 2013 we bought an Epson 5010 3D projector. It still works great.

I don't want to upgrade my blu ray player. But, I see Best Buy has a cheap Sony 4K player for $25. I own the Columbia Capra Collection, and quite a few of the movies come in 4K (along with blu ray).

If I get that cheap 4K player, I know my Epson will project it. But, will it project it as 4K?

THANK YOU!

Nevermind. I asked Grok, and it won't. The 5010 is set to 1080p. It'll play. But, it won't be true 4K.

You sure Best Buy is selling a Sony 4K Blu-ray player for $25? I just looked and didn’t find anything for $25.

There was a wide version for $35 and a small compact one for $25. It was in the Best Buy in Fairless Hills PA. They were both made by Sony. I was going to buy it when I saw it. But, it wasn't on sale. So, I was able to find out if it was worth it for me.

Happen to know a model number? That certainly sounds like it might be a 4K upscaling player. I've never heard of even a 700 being sold at that price (even open box, demo, or refurb). Even the wide/narrow description sounds like some of the Sony BD players. If it is truly a UHD player then buy it

Sony makes 4K upscaling players. They don't actually play 4K UHD discs. You need a Sony player with the 4K Ultra HD logo on it or it will not play your 4K discs. If it just has the regular Blu-ray and DVD logo on it just does 4K upscaling that's it.

I'm not swearing to anything. I looked fairly quick. But, they did have 4K stickers on the models. There were no workers around to help me look. So, when I saw the 4K on the player, I assumed it would play a 4K disc.

Ok, cool. Go back and check the model number to be sure. The UHD model numbers for Sony 4K UHD players are: X700, X800, X800M2, X1000ES and X1100ES. So if it has the model number of any of those it can play 4K discs.

If it's the X700 for $25 I would buy it immediately that's a great price. I would buy both if they match any of those model numbers. $60 for two 4K UHD Sony players is a good deal. If you are correct these have to be open box buys or returns on clearence.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. But, unfortunately, my Epson is 1080, it will upgrade the image a little, but not enough to warrant the player. I'm perfectly happy with my blu rays. Watching them at 9' wide looks and sounds like I'm in a movie theater. I only wanted one becaue the Columbia Capra Collection has about a dozen 4K versions of his films. They also came in blu ray (I own most on blu ray already. So, I have triple the same films). The next time we go to Fairless Hills, I will get the model number. They weren't open box. They were out with all the other players. They just weren't on sale. So, I wasn't worried about the price going up, and it was after Christmas. Depending on when I posted the original, it might have been after New Year's.

You can still buy a 4K UHD player and the 4K discs and watch it in 1080p on your Epson.
