I just finished watching my Kino Lorber Blu-ray of Daisy Kenyon.
Joan Crawford (Mildred Pierce, Sudden Fear) plays a career woman who is caught in the middle of a love triangle between a married attorney, played by Dana Andrews (Laura, Where the Sidewalk Ends), and a traumatized veteran played by Henry Fonda (12 Angry Men, Once Upon a Time in the West). Director Otto Preminger (Laura, Where the Sidewalk Ends, Anatomy of a Murder) keeps this film on the right tracks with realistic character interactions. This is a film noir of a different sort, in that it is a drama first and foremost that brushes with noir by way of some darker plot elements, namely postwar trauma, infidelity, and a poetic, yet saddening, outcome of loss for one of the characters. This Kino Lorber Blu-ray looks naturally filmic, and also sports a decent audio presentation that is good enough that I didn't miss subtitles. The documentaries are engaging, and the commentary track makes a good case for this film's unlikely inclusion in the film noir genre. |
