When I read the title, I assumed they made a Kellyanne Conway biopic.

Watched it last night. Really enjoyed it.

A true story, that I was previously unaware of. The movie starts off in the mid 90's and jumps through time a bit. The main story line, which I'd call the "present" story line, takes place in 95. Madalyn Murray O'Hair, her son, and granddaughter are kidnapped and being held hostage. They eventually see their captor, and it makes sense to them. But we as an audience have no idea who he is. The film jumps back to the 50's, and shows Madalyn's family life, as well as her interactions with her son. She's a loud, highly opinionated woman, that can be quite crass at times. We follow her life through the 50's-70's and see her challenge prayer in public school, as well as creating the American Atheists organization. All the while, we keep being thrown back into the "present".

Her personality is enormous, and the crude language she uses can cause some comic relief; but overall, this movie isn't really supposed to be comical. It's gorgeously shot, and extremely well performed from all the leads involved. A huge ensemble cast of familiar faces, and a story that really ramps up and takes a very dark turn in the final moments, I was engaged the entire time. Very glad I took the time to watch this.

4/5

Why did I think this was a documentary? Weird. Popped up on Netflix the other day so I added it to the list, will check it out soon.

I once wrote O'Hair a letter when I was a teenager, the same year she died, and she wrote me back "You're welcome. And f*ck you." I have it framed.

This was a whole lot of meh, unfortunately. You can't tell her story in a dramedy that runs barely 90 minutes. It had a nice cast (it's nice that Sally Kirkland is still getting work, I love that kook), but Leo mugs a little too often and the screenplay is too content to hit all the bullet points of her life without attempting to show her as the complex woman she was. Until the ending comes, it's so light that it barely stays grounded for a minute.
