Default IMAX 3D or 2D ????

So does anyone know how its determined if IMAX will have a 2D or 3D release of a 3D movie? Most notably this week. Lego Batman. A native 3D movie all the way.. yet when I saw it in IMAX it was 2D. Its been my experience over the last few years that if the movie is being release in 3D then the IMAX screens will show it in 3D. Is this determined by IMAX? By Warner Bros.? Or is it an individual theater choice?

Angry imax 3d or 2d

I have the same question. Would like to know why Lego Batman was;t shown in Imax 3d Who decides. Hope someone can answer this. Otherwise it's just another movie on a big screen.

Looks like this is going to be a new trend for 'family' oriented movies. According to Wikipedia, the other Lego movie that's coming out in September, The Lego Ninjago Movie, will also only be 2D in IMAX theaters (USA). And it looks like Beauty and the Beast will mostly be 2D showings at IMAX. Be careful when purchasing tickets for that one.

I can only surmise that people with families are not paying premium prices for IMAX 3D. For a family of 4 or 5 that can be expensive. I’m not saying that I agree with this strategy but it does appear that IMAX and theater operators want to try something different for family films.

You surmise correctly. An Imax spokesperson confirmed (sorry but I don't have a link) for the exact reason you mentioned. It could cost $100 for some families to see an Imax 3D showing so family films at Imax will be without 3D going forward. Or so they say.

Im confused.. because I read a couple posts saying they saw Lego Batman in Imax 3D.. I have looked on Fandango and cannot find a single Imax theater showing it in 3D. (However I only spot checked.. maybe i missed it) I would love to see the link with showtimes for Imax 3D.

i've tried repeatedly to get their instagram account to answer this question (as they've responded to other comments on their posts), to no avail. it looks like the decision was to release in imax 2d stateside only and was made fairly close to the release (as many places, including fandango, still had an imax 3d listing as "upcoming" for a while), while other countries may have gotten an imax 3d release.

personally i think it's a pretty poor choice given how well the first movie did in imax 3d, although the fact that it only had a one week slot before being replaced by "the great wall" (which gets last week and this week for SOME reason) might have had something to do with it. the premium for imax 3d over 2d is usually less than the difference between standard and standard 3d though, too.

i don't know why they don't just all start do what they're doing for beauty and the beast, which is limiting the imax showings to one or two 3d at later times each day, which makes a lot more sense. or, sometimes with movies that get more than one week, you'll see them drop from imax 3d to imax 2d in later weeks (like with rogue one).

I'm glad I no longer work in the theater business- I'd simply refuse to run ANY 3D movie in 2D!

Because dropping the prices would have made too much sense.

To bad theaters do not feel 3D showings would not simply increase viewing interest...so more $$$$ by volume of ticket sales. Does it cost more to run a 3D movie?

At least in the US, the additional revenue from a 3D ticket sale is being offset by the loss of a ticket sale when not show in 2D.

You could try to force all 3D showings, like China or Russia, but it would likely kill US ticket sales.

BB was 3d imax and it was pretty good but I think the push will be less and less. It does get expensive for families. Also the 3d imax showing was only at 930 and all others were 2d. Makes sense to have the late showing with couples or singles mostly the most expensive

Having worked in the theater business I can say many people in it are full of crap. They would NEVER admit that lowering prices would result in better business (and thus higher overall revenue) in the end. It's still monumentally stupid that they've been dropping 3D showings before dropping the PRICES! I'm pretty much done with theaters at this point anyways- the last straw was spending about $50 to take my parents to see Rogue One at the IMAX and having a smudge in the middle of the screen, plus they turned the house lights up to FULL brightness during the end credits even though I'd complained about that the last time they did it!

Regal IMAX near me charges about the same price for 2D or 3D. Maybe $1.00 less for 2D. ($21 vs. $20)
