Default Good Samurai Films

I need a few suggestions. I used to love Samurai films/cartoons as a kid. However, I slowly forgot about my love for the Samurai sub-genre. I think its time for me to revisit some of the old Samurai films. I have really been in the mood for Samurai movies for the last couple of days.

So, I need a few good suggestions of Samurai films that are out for BD. I know Yojimbo will be out in a couple of days.

Great thread by the way!

I'm digressing a bit here....

1) The Last Samurai
2) Ninja Assassin - not a samurai film...but I highly recommend it.
3) Oldboy - again, not a samurai film...but some old school korean arse kicking.

If you don't have those in your library...add 'em

you definitely have to get all akira kurosawa films that are on blu.

kagemusha
ran
yojimbo/ sanjuro

i guess seven samurai is coming out later

dont have any of them, kind of too pricey for me. all are definitely good. have the 4 criterion dvds of kagemusha, yojimbo, sanjuro, seven samurai.

also a newer samurai film i love for some reason which i dont have on blu, but have on dvd and am patiently waiting on a price drop is,

blind swordsman zatoichi

also i want to buy ichi, have never seen it though.

Sanjuro is also getting released, as is Seven Samurai "later" in the year. Kagemusha and Ran have been released.

My real wish is for Yoji Yamada's samurai trilogy to be released in Bluray:
1) Twilight Samurai (Tasogare Seibei)
2) The Hidden Blade (Kakushi ken oni no tsume)
3) Love & Honor (Bushi no ichibun)

I have all three in R2 SE dvds and have found myself watching all three at least once every month!!

Ichi and Zatoichi

Anime wise, I'd recommend Shigurui (however it is spelled) although the series never got to a finish.

Kagemusha is excellent. just watched it last week. unlike most samurai films, this one emphasizes japanese/samurai etiquette.

Movies I can recommend:

- Every Kurosawa movie out on BD, to name a few: The 7 samurai, Yojimbo, Kagemusha, Sanjuro
- Ichi
- Zatoichi
- Shinobi (not exactly a samurai movie but you might enjoy this one if you like Japanese samurai movies and want to try something a bit more in the fantasy realm)

Movies I can't recommend:
- The Last Samurai: they made a great effort to reproduce the old Japanese landscape and Watanabe Ken plays wonderfully. However, the fact they tried to squeeze Tom Cruise in there ruined the movie for me. It just felt forced and unnatural ... I wish they had given the lead role to Watanabe Ken and left out the westerner-turn-samurai angle.

And no "Hidden Fortress" as of yet, but with Criterion, you know it's only a matter of time...

Hanzo the Razor Trilogy

If you like exploitation/grindhouse style films like Lady Snowblood you'll love these. Unfortunately they're only on DVD.

Seems like the selection samurai films is very minimal for Blu-Ray except for Zatoichi remake, the re-envisioning Ichi, and the Kurosawa films. Can't go wrong with Yojimbo/Sanjuro.
