Phil Tippett’s ‘Mad God’ Stop-Motion Film Is Coming to U.S. Theaters

The theatrical release will pre-date the film's release on Shudder on June 16.

Shudder and IFC Midnight have announced that Mad God, the stop-motion horror film by SFX legend Phil Tippett, will receive a U.S. theatrical run starting on June 10. The theatrical release is ahead of the film’s streaming debut on June 16, with a national rollout on June 17.

Mad God is a surreal stop-motion horror movie filmed over a span of 30 years. The plot follows The Assassin as he takes a dive into the chaotic world of the film. His journey consists of monsters, zombie-like creatures, captive electronic torture victims, and a suitcase holding a bomb. The desolate landscape and horrific scenarios throughout the film make for a confusing ride that has more than its fair share of twists, turns, bends, and snaps for the main character. Why is he here? What is his mission? What did he do to deserve this?

The film is directed by Oscar and Emmy Award-winning stop-motion animator and special effects supervisor Tippett. He also founded Tippett Studio, a production company behind classics such as RoboCop, Starship Troopers, Jurassic Park, Star Wars: A New Hope, and Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. Tippett’s groundbreaking work has been praised by several A-list Hollywood creatives, such as Steven Spielberg, Paul Verhooven, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, and more.

I fear it's more to do with the poor reach of Shudder. If this was a Netflix, Amazon or Disney+ release we'd be on to page 3 by now.

Which is really quite a shame because Shudder is awesome; I've got it through AMC+ and there is just so MUCH good stuff on there. I mean, you can stream the frigging Devils on here!

You can add Shudder as a channel on Amazon.

I've got it thru AMC+, watched Mad God this weekend... no idea what was going on. Much like my last boyfriend, gorgeous but confusing.

I don't have Shudder, but was lucky to have a local movie theater do a one-night screening of this. Everything felt quite visceral on a bigger screen and I had to keep reminding myself "it's only puppets"! Not since 9 have I enjoyed a dark, animated sci-fi film such as this. (It made me wish 9 had been done in stop-motion than the CG that it was).

I was really hoping someone here understood the underlying message of the film, because I haven't a clue! I could only see multiple examples of beings "playing god" with other beings.

To me, I interpreted the whole film as a tale of Evil vs Oblivion:

[Show spoiler]On one hand, you have an obviously fascist empire on its last legs sincerely and repeatedly trying to end existence itself and on the other, you have the literal legions of hell. Specifically, a hell of its own making, mindless crude and endlessly savage. As the film progresses we of course see that this isn't the only world that is affected by this madness and only with the passage of time, do the goals of ending it all are finally accomplished.

An undeniably cruel piece of work this but my God, is it just breathtaking to witness in its entirety. And lucky! I would have killed to see this on the big screen.

What was clear was the cynicism about modern day society, it's politics, working 9-5 jobs to death and their (literal) shit trickle down hierarchies. I couldn't tell you the purpose of the autopsy or the

I have to assume the ending is a commentary on mankind

Didn't do a lot for me. Visually striking but pretty hollow, seen most of this kind of thing before. Gets plus points for the Kubelwagen and Alex Cox really needs a mani-pedi. Also made me want to rewatch the 1985 anime Angel's Egg
