Question PS4: Bitstream Dolby or DTS? (Optical cable)

Hello, i recently got a new 5.1 surround system for my PS4. Connected via optical cable.
Now i was wondering, which setting should i use for watching Blu-rays? DTS Bitstream or Dolby Bitstream?
Is there a difference on PS4? Thank you for reading.

For clarification, does your A/V receiver have a Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoder? and if so, you will have to connect an HDMI cable to get lossless HD audio, not optical. An optical cable connection will only output lossy 5.1 up to 7.1 sound. The receiver will automatically decode whichever audio that you select from the blu-ray audio setup, whether if it's Dolby or DTS.

I've never understood the option, as it seems like a holdout when DTS wasn't as common with equipment, ideally I'd output Dolby as Dolby and DTS as DTS. If you're equipment doesn't support DTS select Dolby, otherwise stick with DTS.

My equipment supports DTS and Dolby. It's just strange i have 3 options on PS4 setting. 1. PCM (which doesn't give me 5.1 with my optical cable). 2. DTS bitstream. 3. Dolby bitstream. I wasn't sure which to choose. Both options, DTS bitstream and Dolby DTS give me 5.1 sound.
I just wondered which to choose and if there is a difference.

No HDMI option unfortunately. But it accepts DTS and Dolby via optical, apparently lossy as you said but at least it's a decent 5.1 sound.
Now, the DTS bitstream and Dolby bitstream options are from the PS4, it forces me to choose one. So which one is it? Or doesn't it matter?

What kind of PS4 do you have that doesn't have a HDMI input? that's strange..Choose whichever audio codec that featured on the blu-ray. You will have to select whichever audio codec on that's featured on that particular blu-ray movie in English (DTS or Dolby). For instances: if the blu-ray has DTS English, then you will have to select DTS on the PS4 and vice-versa for Dolby.

My 5.1 system doesn't have a HDMI input not my PS4 (what made you even think my PS4 doesn't have HDMI? ALL of them do!) , hence i'm using an optical cable to connect my 5.1 system with my PS4.
So i have to change the PS4's setting each time i watch a Blu-ray movie with DTS or Dolby? Eh...

PCM is mainly for stereo... when using the optical output, select DTS because both formats will play. If you select DD on the console, You wont get DTS on any disc. This is also an important selection if you use a headset for gaming, especially with the Astro Mixamp...

THe PS4 doesn't have HDMI in... only out. The XBox One has an input so that Microsoft can let you control your cable box through the console.

No, you don't have to do anything else to the PS4 once you've connected the optical cable for the audio. On the audio setup on the blu-ray, choose either an English DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio or Dolby TrueHD, (whichever the blu-ray movie is encoded with) and you should be good to go. Since your receiver is not DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD compatible, the soundtrack on the blu-ray will automatically default to a core and lossy DTS or Dolby.

As I said go with DTS if your equipment can handle it. Generally DTS will offer a higher quality output than Dolby (with regards to lossy audio), but that's when the source is DTS. I doubt there's any difference when the PS4 converts Dolby into DTS.

Thank you, this is exactly what happens. Even though it's not lossy, after using the PS4 "options" during Blu-ray playback, i had to set there also to "Bitsream", it made the sound clearly superior and 5.1, lossy but decent enough. Thread can be closed.
