Default Episodic movie fatigue

So Guy Ritchie wanted a six film series for King Arthur which he's not getting which I was just informed of. . We also have numerous marvel movies which can stand on their own, but still they're sequels.

Then there's Star Trek, Star Wars and so on.

At least the Hunger Games had the good grace to end as well as Harry Potter, but that universe is still having movies pulled out of it.

They make money regardless and they're not going away anytime soon.

I admit I do love a lot of these, but at the same time they're starting to feel like TV episodes on the big screen.

It would be nice if they could make their blockbuster and then not feel the greedy urge to make a sequel right off the bat. I get it. They make money and Hollywood will milk it for all its worth.

This isn't just comic book superhero fatigue. It's episodic movie fatigue altogether that I'm feeling along with my wallet. Looking back over the last three to five years most of the movies we saw in theaters were for these kinds of movies. Rarely is any of them a standalone movie.

Here is quite the list of upcoming sequels. Having skimmed through it, some I'm not that confidant will get made. Gladiator 2, anyone? Maximus died at the end of the last one. A few on the list already have.

179 movie sequels currently in the works

Anyone else feeling fatigued by all these sequels?

Well, first: That ain't happening. That plan went the way of the dodo when WB had to do major reshoots on the film. It's upcoming low box office will simply be the final nail in that coffin. So, what was planned in 2014 died in 2016.

But to your general point - studios can plan and hope all they want, but it takes paying audiences to bring it to fruition.

All this is to say the ones that make $$$ will continue, and the ones who don't will fall away by the wayside.

Even a franchise like Divergent won't get finished because audiences ultimately completely lost interest.

From a personal standpoint - see what you want, and don't feel obligated to see something you don't like. If you're getting fatigued by "episodic" movie series, don't see them for a while. It's really that simple.

Not just movies to me, video games too.

Most recently, with Mass Effect Andromeda. After blowing 120 hours with the original trilogy, I was okay with a one time spinoff 40 hour adventure, but not a sequel or a trilogy. It can get really exhausting after the series has run its course.

Thanks for the info. I hadn't read past the title of that thread.

I'm planning on only seeing a couple of movies this summer. We did go a lot last year, but seeing how many were sequels in the next 1-2 years which felt like episodic big screen tv shows has really frustrated me.

I'm curious as to if others have felt this way or not.

I think the easiest thing to do is see what you really want to see in theatres and rent or buy the movies on Blu-ray in-between.

I think the only problem is when they plan sequels before there is even demand for them. Anyone could have told you that even if this first King Arthur film was really good, people were not going to be clamoring for five more films in the series.
Or Divergent, which just assumed that there would still be life enough to break the last book into two films, and now fans of that may never see the conclusion.
The whole breaking the last book into multiple films as a blatant cash grab was annoying enough for things like Hunger Games, Harry Potter, and especially The Hobbit. But at least those they could feel pretty confident in knowing the fan demand would still be there.

I do think the studios are getting a little better at learning which properties can be franchises and which ones cannot. But studios have been making miscalculations in productions since they were formed in the 20s. It just so happens that its being applied to serialized tentpole production nowadays.

As a movie fan I have never understood the desire by people for studios to stop doing things. Stop doing remakes. Stop making sequels. Stop milking franchises. At the end of the day studios are businesses. End of.

The worst possible situation you can find yourself in is that you don't like a movie. Nothing lost except a bit of your time. If you take a series like Die Hard which has degraded with every installment. They can make as many as they like because the ones that are crap I can forget and carry on with my life. But they may make another fantastic one. I do think however that it would be nice if a little more time and effort between installments was taken. Knocking out sequels left and right purely for profit is a little frustrating. But like I say, it ultimately is all about the $.

They should've stopped after the 4th Hellraiser. After that they collected some random scripts, wrote in Pinhead and made them on a cheap budget.

Why doesn't this get the reboot it deserves?

I haven't been to the movies since January. This is why. Movies are just...unoriginal nowadays. Enough.

Then you've missed out on some interesting, non-episodic movies (Get Out in particular).

The thing is, each one of us is tired of something at some moment and thinks 'Enough already!'. But when it's something we like, we suddenly have no problem with it. I'm guilty too.

This is the correct strategy and what I do, I simply don't go to the theater unless there is something worth seeing or someone worth paying for. Tom Cruise is coming up with The Mummy, I'll definitely see that because I'd rather Tom Cruise get roles that someone entirely horrific and talentless like Chris Pratt.

I'm not so much sick of sequels as sick of sequels that are nothing more than feature-length advertisements for more sequels. Remember when you could roll out for the latest James Bond, Indiana Jones or Die Hard sequel and it didn't really matter if you had seen the previous installment(s)? Nowadays you have sequels that are so busy laying pipe for more installments and spin-offs that they forget to be entertaining or even coherent...Iron Man 2 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 were particularly egregious examples of this. Hey, how about let us enjoy the movie we're currently watching before you start advertising the next one, hah?

I'll admit to being a little tired, from the sequels being placed so close together...but its still better than the rest of Hollywood's trashy output these days. With the Marvel roster, at least they mix it up; we haven't gotten any immediate sequels since the start of the MCU. Lucasfilm is now making that attempt as well, alternating between Episodes and spinoffs.

What bothers me more than almost anything else, is the oversaturation of raunchy and crass fare in films today. Its gotten to the point you can barely watch a PG-rated film without some kind of obscene reference. Of course, the only way anything gets changed is by people speaking with their wallets...but most don't care enough to do that, and the more selfish filmmakers bank on it.

I like the 3 original episodic Star Trek movies (Khan, Spock, Whales). I usually try to watch them as a trio, though they're separate enough that they can be watched on their own.

But with the Marvel movies, I'm starting to get fatigued. Civil War is one that you really feel like you're walking into a half finished movie if you don't watch some of the others beforehand, and I'm not too keen on needing Strange to get Thor 3. That's why I liked that Logan just kind of did its own thing.

I say, keep 'em coming. I'd rather have the opportunity to see what I want to see than being forced to only see non-franchised fare. Besides, there are still plenty of non-sequel films out there in theatres. You just may have to avoid major multiplexes in order to avoid the sequels is all.

I'm not fatigued by it at all.

If it's a sequel of a movie I liked, I'll watch it. If not, I won't. Be it episodic or not. Pretty simple.

If they make Alien 14 or Jurassic Park 22, I'll die a happy camper. It's not like there's only episodic movies out there.
