Happy 2008 to everyone!
Hi Everyone: I have been a lurker for about 2 weeks and am so anxiously waiting for BLU to trump the other people. I have an xbox 360 and was tempted to buy the add on but held back because my gut tells me we will be a BLU world. With that said this is my situation and I would love the support from you awesome people. 42 inch Sony LCD 1080I (3 years old) My condo's niche only allows for 42 inch (bummer) Xbox360 connected with HDMI Upconvert DVd player connected with HDMI Panasonic Receiver 5.1, 3 years old, NO HDMI slot I would like to take advantage best I can with what I have with the exception of buying a new receiver. I have no problems buying a new one with HDMI but dont NEED 7.1 as I am in a 2 bedroom condo with neighbors!Buying a new TV is pointless as i have nowhere to put it!! SO, Do I purchase a PS3 or a stand alone bluray player. I keep reading that the PS3 is the way to go but also notice that certain audio jargon isnt possible with the PS3, and that may not matter with my sound system. Hence the utter confusion!!! Yes, its another game platform that I can use but I dont see myself at 30 years old buying games for two different platforms, but who knows. Let's say 1 year from now, will be I happier with a stand alone or the ps3 as this BLU technology advances. SOOOOO CONFUSED. |

Let me confuse you more....
If you put a panny BD-30 in place of your up converting and a Onkyo HDMI receiver in place of your existing you will be very impressed BUT because you are a gamer. I would suggest the PS3, new games and the upgrade receiver... It supports 7.1 and all the great new formats, but will also drive a 5.1 system for now... someday you may have a bigger place take that !! ![]() |

![]() I really don't see anything wrong about being 30 and owning two game consoles, who says you can't still be a kid at heart. But seriously the PS3 is an excellent choice for a Blu-ray player and a lot of people here have it and they don't buy games, they have it as a blu-ray player only. Now you are correct that the PS3 doesn't decode(or bitstream) all the new audio formats and that's really the only thing that I see as a drawback for it. For standalones I always recommend the Panasonic DMP-BD30K, it's profile 1.1 (so is the PS3) so you can have your PIP commentary, it can bitstream all the new audio formats, and it's load times are comparable to the PS3. Either one will be a good choice in a player. |

Welcome to Blu-ray.com! I would highly recommend the PS3, not just for the versatility, but for the fact that it will almost always be the most up-to-date BD player you can have with firmware updates. Doesn't hurt that it plays games either. :-)

you could get a standalone bluray player that has internal decoding ability...
Have an old school receiver and want Lossless audio?? ...But I would recommend a new Receiver and/or PS3. ![]() |
