Unhappy My ears are bleeding

Anyone else have someone like this in their life?

My housemate cannot answer the simplest question imaginable without providing a 5,000-word soliloquy in return. I swear to god, merely inquiring as to what time it is infallibly subjects me to a filibuster-length rejoinder that saps my energy just receiving it into my eardrums. Actual, genuine conversations with her are basically impossible.

I have tried and tried and tried, being pushed to the point of barking at or even begging her, to get her to please try to be succinct and not embellish endlessly, to no avail. (Thank heaven my boyfriend, whom is also driven crazy by this idiosyncrasy, communicates on my wavelength.)

Rant over. *adjourning to salve my bleeding ears*

Couldn't you have just said, "she overexplains the problem"?

that's funny right there, i don't care who you are.

ot: my dad used to be that way. if my mom asked him a question about a date in history, he couldn't just answer the question with a "yes" or "no" or something simple. he had to go into the ENTIRE history of the subject.

case in point:

my mom asked him one time, "isn't russia the same as the u.s.s.r.?" and instead of saying, "yeah, pretty much. it's the same country but they changed the name because of....." he went into the history of each of them, how long they were named that. where the names came from, who the leaders were at any given time in their histories, the wars they fought in, their allies, etc., etc., etc.

after he got through, my mom said, "you know, i wasn't looking for a history lesson. i was just curious and asked a simple question."

he was smart as hell; and it sucked watching jeopardy with him. but, man, sometimes he could just give too much information that you really didn't ask for.

I'm kind of the same way, except not smart, but I go into a lot of detail when I talk but I realize I do that and I'm always apologizing. I think it's because I was always awkward and kind of avoided talking so sometimes, I make up for it lol And I'm just big on details sometimes.

But hey at least you have a roommate that likes talking to you and doesn't want to kill you or do something sinister.

And yes, ronboster's reply was quite funny

Hahaha!! Man, that sounds just about like my dad. I'll ask a simple question and he'll go into a long detailed answer, verging off into tangents while trying to recall a particular place or name. Sometimes I don't mind but other times I'm thinking "I just need a 'yes' or 'no' is all."

My boss has this kind of habit. Always digging into so many details, the point becomes lost pretty quickly. Other times, he tends to talk around subjects.

He also has this horrid habit of micromanaging--to the point where if I had to write e-mails he'd sometimes write them his way then have me send them. Once, I swear he gave me three huge paragraphs, but I sent it out as just once sentence.

Unfortunately, it's not a trait that can be changed, all we can do it put up with it. I find I can mitigate some of the excessive talking by jumping to the point once I see it--it might feel a little bad to cut off my boss, but it definitely saves time.

Guilty as charged. I've caught myself doing it and a drifting away look will just appear on the face of the person I'm talking to. I learned to recognize it.

I'm guilty of the same problem. My son can verify it.

I know I've had some bosses that were guilty of over explaining. When you ask, "what time is it? They tell you how the watch is made".

My girl is like this. She's always been an overly bubbly social person without a filter and is very opinionated and loves to speak her mind. She can fill gaps of silence in conversation and generally gets along with about anyone. But she can't really appreciate silence, either, and so for hobbies like watching a movie -- it's not watching a movie. It becomes another social event where she has to share her opinions (usually negative if it's something I pick out) and running commentary for the duration as it's playing. It's no different with video games - she usually only will play a game if there's a social element involved such as a chatbox with her teammates or a game where everyone talks to one another over a headset. I prefer to do those kinds of things in silence but some people just aren't wired that way I guess.

oh wow! my dad did this, as well. he'd try to figure out the plot then talk about it as the movie went on. that's why i hardly ever watched a movie when he was in the same room. he couldn't just sit and watch the movie. he had to put in his on commentary.

I know what you mean. Right now we only have one tv hooked up and so most movies are watched together and I've kind of learned/adapted to accept it. But cult horror or anything that I know for sure will get absolutely blasted from start to finish I try to save for hours when I have the house to myself. I still get riffed to this day for taking us to go see It Follows.
