It'll be a close race unless Alien manages to somehow horribly bomb. Given the fairly positive reviews for Covenant and that I think Guardians Vol. 2, like most movies that open in its range (and most superhero movies in general), is fairly front-loaded and will drop off somewhere in the low-to-mid-50 percentile, I think that would put Guardians 2 somewhere in the lower 30 million range on the weekend of the 19th. I think Alien can do it.

This is a very hard week to decide on #1, but going based on review/word of mouth:
1. GotG vol. 2 $40 million
2. Alien: Covenant $36 million
3. Wimpy Kid $15 million
4. King Arthur $10 million
5. Everything Everything $8 million.

I know using the local theater is not a reliable gauge, but showings of Alien are nearly sold out where I'm at and we are a week away from release (just an interesting observation, surprised me). It all depends on Guardians this week. If it drops at a rate of 50-59% like most Marvel films, that would put it around the mid $30 million range. I'd say Alien with $40 million or so.

Although, it wouldn't shock me if Guardians got a slight bump from teens who buy tickets for it but sneak into Covenant.

I voted Guardians vol. 2.

I'll be seeing Covenant, but I still think Guardians will pull off the win.

I honestly feel like Alien: Covenant will struggle to hit $40M.

I hope it makes atleast $40m. But the Prometheus reception will probably hurt it

I think Alien: Covenant will win it this weekend, but will drop off quickly due to bad word of mouth

Could easily see Guardians winning again. Alien is my most-anticipated movie of the year and I've already bought my ticket, but for some reason I don't feel like there's a lot of excitement about it.

Guardians is going to make about $60M this weekend. Alien would have to open below $30M for Guardians to win.

According to BOM, early tracking suggests a 30 million opening for Covenant.
