![]() DOCSIS 3.1 10Gbps cable modems are now available In the past consumers that wanted access to residential 10Gbps upload and 10Gbps download speeds were required to live in a large city that has 100% fiber optics to the customers home. Several smaller cities offer 1Gbps upload and 1Gbps download speeds using 100% fiber optics. However, with DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem technology regular cable companies that have a hybrid fiber/copper network are able to offer consumers 1Gbps download speeds. Now consumers can purchase a DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem for under $200 that offers 10Gbps download speeds over hybrid fiber/copper cable network. However, one needs to live in area where the local cable company offers 10Gbps download speeds. The first generation ARRIS SB8200 DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem is capable of 10Gbps download speed and 2Gbps upload speed. However, what is a big disappointment on this cable modem is that the two Ethernet ports are only 1Gbps speed instead of 10Gbps speed. Therefore, even if ones Cable Company is able to provide 10Gbps download speed, the end user is only going to get 1Gbps upload and download speed do to limitation in this first generation products Ethernet port. High-end motherboards on PC’s have 10Gbps Ethernet jacks, and all future cable modems that are capable of 10Gbps speeds need to have a minimum of a 10Gbps Ethernet jack in order to take advantage of the cable modems speed. Placing a 1Gbps Ethernet jack on a cable modem that is capable of 10Gbps download speeds is a bad idea. https://arris--c.na13.content.force.com/sfc/dist/version/downloadNoFlash?oid=00D30000000kUAL&ids=068a000000 5qXPV&d=%2Fa%2Fa0000000QLcc%2FAm.TJXJiW_QaOfC8Vex3 9VwyYhAwSaERKU2JhcDmeTo In some rural areas, there is no cable TV service available, and one uses their local telephone company for Internet service. In some rural areas where twisted pair phone wire is used instead of RG-6 cable TV wire, the fastest Internet speed available is around 12Mbps download and 2Mbps upload under ideal conditions. There are some rural areas of the USA where bonded Internet service using two or more physical telephone lines is not available because of a quality issue in the copper cable pairs.
