Japan Digimon Adventure (15th Anniversary Blu-ray box set)

Happinet will release Digimon Adventure (デジモンアドベンチャー) (1999-2000) as a Blu-ray box set for the series' 15 Anniversary, on March 3rd, 2015.

I did not follow this show. It seems likely, though, that this was done in SD, yes? Happinet are claiming it will be 1080i, which would mesh with that, too:

That's... intense. I am interested in this but doubt it will be English friendly at all. It would probably be hard to make a custom dub version too. Adding subtitles would be a lot easier with this release.

As much as I want this show on blu ray, I wouldn't even purchase it if it had English subs. I grew up with this show on the Fox Kids dub, and for me, it wouldn't be the same without it.

I'd buy a sub-only release of this in a heartbeat. As nostalgic as it admittedly is, the old Saban dub, with its lame jokes crammed in every other second, hasn't aged well at all.

Welp, as expected, the BDs are a POS thanks to Q-Tec's eye cancerous blur crap mastering.

Avoid, avoid, avoid, and don't buy this crap.

Dayum. If the quality is really that bad on the Blu-ray's that makes this set a complete waste of money. The US DVD's are way better quality than that. Yuck.

Since this set is just an upscale anyway the only big benefit would be a lack of compression artifacts and maybe slightly better color. But if the Q-Tec mucked up scenes to where some of the footage looks like THAT there is literally no point to this release. You might as well just keep the DVD's.

I can't believe they expect hundreds of dollars for a set with that kind of "remastering" quality.

Nice artwork, but unless someone gets the set and confirms with screenshots a much better quality than the HD broadcasts, I'll still be passing on it.

I wish sometimes studios would put as much time into the presentation of the work itself and not just the packaging (as is sometimes the case).

Definitely still doesn't look great, but the screencaps and review here make this seem a little better than the other screencaps from the TV broadcast indicated. I'd be tempted at half the price, but as it stands, I can't go for this.

A boxset of all the movies was released earlier this year; I hope they do individual releases though, as I'm really only interested in the Digimon Adventure movies (maaaybe also Digimon Adventure 02). Not getting my hopes up though...

Doesn't look too bad, and the set itself is definitely awesome. I'd consider getting this if an english version were released

I'm re-experiencing this show as originally intended in Japanese through Netflix. I've come across episode 21 ("Koromon Tōkyō Daigekitotsu!" - when Tai and Koromon gets back to the real world for one episode). I remembered getting goosebumps the first time watching this on Fox Kids as a kid. Now with a deeper understanding of the series (and with the original unaltered script in Japanese), I can probably say that this is one of the best (if not the best) in the Digimon series period.

That said, how does this episode look on Blu-Ray? The animation is reminiscent to the movie that takes place before the series (even the score/background music suggests that!) and it is a beauty to say the least, making all other episodes, even the digivolution sequences, flat and dull.

Man I can go on and on about this episode. It's such a huge signature turning point in the series.

Can't say anything about the Blu-ray, but I agree with your assessment of the episode. It really does stand out as a cut above the rest. It really is superior to all the other episodes in almost every way, plus, it seems to have higher production values. I wonder if it actually had a higher budget than the rest of the episodes?

Anyway, the episode is actually directed by Mamoru Hosoda (who directed both of the Digimon Adventure movies, and is now on his way to becoming the next Miyazaki), so it is no surprise that you find a connection there. It definitely must have been a very intentional choice having him direct the episode, as the content of the episode itself has a strong connection to the prequel movie.

I'd be great if they released a stand-alone release of the two Digimon Adventure films and that episode; It'd be a nice mini Hosoda Collection. I'd buy that in a flash!

Gotta check it out again on Netflix. I read that Digimon Adventure, 02, and Tamers will all be pulled from Netflix (US) on August 1. So if you're in the US, you might need to get going on that!

Each of the main discs from this set are being released individually on 1/6. Definitely in for Vol. 1 (Adventure) and possible Vol. 2 (Adventure 02).

The 3D Blu-ray disc and the soundtrack CD will seemingly remain exclusive to the boxset.

That episode is quality at its finest. It almost makes me wish he directed the entire season though as you've probably guessed it, it would have been out of their budget. Just goes to show "less is more", which is why feature films generally look better than a stretch of one season on TV. Knowing that the Blu-Ray is upscaled makes me really wonder how that particular episode presents itself. And I can definitely see why he's to be the "next Miyazaki" with what I've seen so far.

And yes, the ENTIRE Digimon Adventure has been removed from Netflix on August 1st! (the irony only Digimon fans will understand out of that) I was on the 2nd last episode before the season finale. Only the inferior Fox Kids version made its return on Netflix, probably to help capitalize the eventual Digimon Cyber Sleuth Video game coming soon, even though it's stated to include Japanese audio only (another irony there).

Even if the Blu-Rays are upscaled, it's better than having the show pulled off of a streaming service. I'm gathering that some people are saying it has english subtitles and some it doesn't, or that even the future Digimon Tri Blu-Ray will include it being region free. But 'til then, I hope they make way for North American fans to purcahse it because the import prices are not friendly for us.

I'm already thinking of importing the Digimon Adventure CDs because I just love the theme / insert songs. Butter-fly, brave heart - you name it. There is honestly no going back to the version of the show I grew up with now. I need my Digimon Adventure fix !
