I just received the newest issue of Widescreen Review. I have enjoyed reading their 3d blu ray reviews and their take on 3d tvs and projectors. It is so strange to see them acting like many movies that are currently out in 3d do not exist in 3d. The last issue has Jumanji and Last Jedi reviewed in 4k only.
If someone did not visit this site, they might never know these movies exist readily in 3d format. Yes I know these 3d blu rays are not released here in the US. You think Widescreen Review doesn't know this as well? This has been an ongoing process with Widescreen Review for quite a while, reviewing big 3d movies available in 3d blu ray but only with 4k reviews and acting like 3d versions don't exist. In fact here is their ONLY mention of 3d in the entire magazine: "A 3D stereo conversion was performed by Gener8 Canada and Gener8 India, but no 3D Blu-ray Disc release." This was taken from their review of Jumanji 4k. Disingenuous to say the least. Just wanted to thank everyone here and give a big FU to everyone else who acts like 3d doesn't even exist. I hope against all hope that someone from Widescreen Review will read this and give us a real answer. Last edited by wildbill722; 04-14-2018 at 03:12 PM. |

AFAIC, the A/V biz (All fronts) don't give a damn about consumers or their preferences. (Even though they know the market is there, but it cuts into UHD sales and they don't want that). For them, the earth (and video) is flat.
But to be fair, most review discs that the studio gives them are free. And studios will not offer free 3D discs for review. |

I didn't even know WR still existed...
I subscribed to the magazine during the mid-90s for LD info and reviews. I use to demo LDs for friends and talk up stuff like theatrical OAR and 5.1 sound. Jurassic Park was probably my best disc, remember those LD side changes? Sam Jackson would yell 'Kill the power!' and screen would go dark due to side change. By around 2000, I was laying low trying to figure out if DVD was going to take over. At some point, I lost track of them... |

As a longtime WSR subscriber, I must say that in the past they have gone out of their way to review 3D Blu Ray movies. Sometime last year, they even had 2 issues that featured a round-up of past 3D reviews. These days the number of reviews have dropped. I'm not sure if that is due to a new person doing the reviews or a policy change.

In last month's review here is what they state about Thor Ragnarok:
"A theatrical presentation was presented as a 3D conversion by Stereo D and Legend 3D but not released on 3D Blu-ray." You ok with that? ps and the last 3d blu ray review in the magazine itself was May of 2017, one year ago. Last edited by wildbill722; 04-14-2018 at 07:10 PM. |

Well, I’ve never read their stuff before, but from what I can tell, they’re based out of Temecula, California in the U.S.
Unless I’m mistaken, on the releases where they mention that there is no 3D release, they’re most likely referring to a domestic release, right? Have they reviewed any 3D Blu-ray releases from countries other than the States? Typical consumers don’t import titles from all over the planet like we do here. We’re different, in a good way. ![]() |

I've been a subscriber - since like forever, anyhow ... I have to say they are a bit anal over the immersive 'overhead' sound cues from Dolby Atmos and DTS-X (blurays/UHD) discs, where it comes across as a tad pompous and 'we could do better' - it's a tad off putting and has made me want to just let stop getting it, but that obviously hasn't happened. I do have to say though there best coverage is of cinema history and theater advances, which is less and far between.
In regards to the UHD review of 'Thor Ragnarok' - they apparently did not hear the same problem that many reviewers are noting (lack of dynamic punch and depth) - which leaves me a bit baffled as they actually think it's an excellent audio track. In reviewing 3D blurays, it's all mostly US releases, no imports, shame really. |

I still subscribe to them as well (going on 16 years) as I still find something interesting in there from time to time. Print media is a tough business to be in nowadays, as advertisers are not as abundant as they used to be. Oppo was a big one for them, which might be a tough one to replace now that Oppo is closing up shop. Gary Reber (editor) always struck me as more of an audio guy, but still someone who appreciates video. I used to analyze their reference theater diagrams all the time, as they provided inspiration as I upgraded and tweaked my room. |
