Default Question about TV setting (aspect ratio)

1. How is I that when I turn on my Blu Ray player or Xbox one the top corner of the screen displays "1080p" input "Wide", when there is no "Wide" option in my TVs picture settings? Where is the 'Wide' message coming from? The Player/Sky Box/Xbox? My TV picture settings are Auto, 16.9, 14.9 4:3, Zoom 1, and Zoom 2 so why doesn't the display say 16:9?

2. On my old Crt tv anamorphic DVDs used to switch my TV to "Widescreen" mode which I understand. But there is no anamorphic in the world of Blu ray so is Wide mode the same as 16:9?

Thanks for any clarification.

Set the TV to 16x9. Set your Blu-ray player and Xbox's video outputs, so that 4:3 ratio content has black bars on the sides of the image (windowboxing) rather than stretching it across your screen (making things look short and squat). Your manuals should have descriptions. Each product calls those 16x9 display modes differently.

That should correct any issues.

16:9 is widescreen, but the TV is displaying it as widescreen instead of 16:9. They're both the same! Most manufacturers use the term "Widescreen" on their video setup screen.

The Wide info-bar is probably because the TV detects a non-flagged image. There's a few devices that start off with boot logos that are unset. Both my LG and Sony BD players boot with logos that look squashed if I set my TV to Original. When the 16:9 menu appears, all is well.

I'd imagine if you plugged a DVD player in you'd be presented with a Wide option, but otherwise it's greyed out or not even an option.

Pedantically, window-boxing would indicate black bars on the sides and top and bottom. Pillar-boxing is one the sides.
