Japan Crazy Samurai Musashi (feat. a 77-minute one-shot action scene)

Quote:
Shimomura’s third feature debuted at Barcelona’s Asian Summer Film Festival in July, before a North American premiere at Fantasia Film Festival last month.

Well Go USA has acquired rights for the US and Canada, with My Theater DD releasing the film in Japan.

It features a 77-minute single-shot action sequence, which represents 85% of the film’s 91-minute runtime.

Tak Sakaguchi stars as Miyamoto Musashi, a legendary swordsman who sets out to defeat 400 enemies from the Yoshioka clan. Kento Yamazaki, Yosuke Saito, Ben Hiura and Arata Yamanaka are alongside him on the cast.

Acclaimed Japanese filmmaker Sion Sono wrote the concept for the film, with Atsuki Tomori writing the script. Shinichi Fujita produced the title, with Takayuki Ota as executive producer.

“It took us seven years to complete the film as after the 77-minute one-shot scene was initially filmed, Tak had broken fingers, ribs, and teeth, and couldn’t even grip the sword anymore,” Ota said. ”After buying the rights, we worked on the opening and ending.”

The Musashi character, based on a 17th-century swordsman, was previously played by legendary Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune in Hiroshi Inagaki’s 1950s Samurai trilogy. [+]

Interesting. Well Go does nice, consistent releases, and I hope there's an opportunity for 4K since they've begun doing that. I have to imagine this could get more 4K purchases than Ne Zha? Maybe not.

I’m a sucker for a long take, but it all depends on how it serves the film overall.

In 70 minutes, he would have to cut more than one person!

Certainly seems like the title is perfectly adept.

Shame reception for this is poor, I’d love to see this sort of scale fight scene pulled off well, but it sounds like this isn’t the one.

This looks bonkers....Can't wait to check this out. The choreography is going to have to be aces to maintain focus over such an extreme amount of time, though!

I'll watch it out of intrigue but that's not a very well shot film. Looks a bit on the boring side w/ the visuals. I guess I'd call it flat?

I should have ordered from there. I got an email form Amazon saying March 27 - April 2 for the movie to ship. I am sure it will ship in a few days.

Watched this and thought it was OK. The opening was awesome, but it pretty much becomes what you expect it to become, a long fight. You'll see the same actors die about 20 times. Anytime someone gets sliced/killed, they move out of frame, only to return a minute later.

On a technical level it's pretty impressive, but overall felt more like a video game I wasn't playing than a movie.

Have you ever seen the Betrayal with Raizo Ichikawa? Now that’s an epic one samurai vs the world scene...but the movie is a lot more than that.
