Default ParaNorman 4K UHD (2012)

ParaNorman 4K Blu-ray

ParaNorman 4K Blu-ray SteelBook

The Laika company‘s stop-motion animated films “Coraline” and “ParaNorman” will be coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray in both standard and SteelBook forms on December 13th via Shout! Factory. The films are briefly individually highlighted below.

“Coraline” from 2009 was directed by Henry Selick, best known for also directing “The Nightmare Before Christmas” (1993). Selick adapted the screenplay from a book written by Neil Gaiman. The film featured the voice talents of Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, John Hodgman, Ian McShane, and Keith David. Tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray include a 2160p video presentation in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of high dynamic range and Dolby Atmos sound.

“ParaNorman” from 2012 was co-directed by Chris Butler and Sam Fell. Chris Butler also wrote the screenplay. The film featured the voice talents of Kodi Smit-McPhee, Tucker Albrizzi, Anna Kendrick, Casey Affleck, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Leslie Mann, Jeff Garlin, Alex Borstein, and John Goodman. Tech specs for the 4K UHD Blu-ray include a 2160p video presentation in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio with HDR10 and Dolby Vision forms of high dynamic range and Dolby Atmos sound.

Both of these 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook releases will come in the form of a “combo pack” meaning that they each will also include their Blu-ray Disc counterpart. So far, you cannot yet find either of these available for preorder yet but stay tuned for updates. The bonus materials will include all of the previous Blu-ray extras from the latest editions as well as a booklet [for each]. Also, the 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBooks (pictured further above) each feature new hand-drawn artwork. There’s no artwork yet for the standard 4K releases of the films but stay tuned for an update on that later.

We were spoiled a decade ago. Hotel Transylvania? Frankenweenie? Paranorman? Great time to be Halloweenie.

Excellent. The only Laika UHD I need. Wish it were coming out in time for Halloween, though.

My favorite Laika. Looking forward to hearing the score in Atmos. It’s one of my all-time favorites.

Wow, definitely pre-ordering both of these. I love both films. Dolby Vision and Atmos, awesome!

I’m mad I bought the Coraline one because I didn’t already have it but I think it was only $11-12 anyway.

I’m really excited for these OUTSTANDING movies.
Except I cringed when it said Shout. (see Platoon 4K thread. ugh!)

Don’t know about that steelbook art, and I suppose I’ll need to wait for reviews on the PQ.

Platoon's DNR isn't a Shout problem. All we need to worry about is garbage compression tbh.

I have a soft spot for all the Laika films, but it's the 3d versions that I've watched, and this just makes me wish for more 3d content.
I'd also be thrilled to have remastered 3d versions. Just think about how good they would look today...

The listings on Shout!'s website don't mention the films being included on the BR discs included in the new 4K packages for ParaNorman and Coraline. It would surprise me if they authored new BRs for these, but I'm wary to preorder without certainty that the film is included on the BR, given how spotty Shout!'s 4K encoding has been...

Edit 1: They also don't mention the art and essay booklets from the BR sets in the features for the 4K sets.

Edit 2: Shout! responded to me very quickly noting that the booklets will still be included, and the BRs will still include the feature. Instant preorder for me now, since I've held off on buying these and the steelbooks look great!

Coraline or Paranorman? I like the Paranorman art. Coraline is the one I find disappointing.

I hope people will keep in mind that if these are successful we might have a better chance at getting Kubo.

In fact, I might well buy one of these for that very reason.

Kubo is a masterpiece.

My unicorn though is Isle of Dogs.

No chance any company other than Criterion releases that one. They handle all Wes Anderson films.
