Default Paprika USA Release - First Review

http://www.dvdfile.com/index.php?opt...=6383&Itemid=3

It would also seem that it is in AVC codec, and not MPEG-2 like the Japan/French/German Release.

I knew this one would benefit from going to MPEG2 + PCM on a 25go disc to Dual Layer AVC..

Great review. Sounds like I'll be picking up the U.S. version instead of the Japanese version of this one.

enjoy

Thanks for the post! Definitely getting it now. Satoshi Kon is a great director.

The other releases were MPEG on dual layer discs, not single layer.

It seems to be MPEG2. I also have a hard time believing they would bother to do a new encode when the original one is more than serviceable.

Although I've never bothered with anything but the movie itself, I understand the copy I bought in France last summer had some problems with special features not working right. With that in mind they may have re-visited the title in terms of encoding when bringing to region 1 or A or whatever.

Someone on AVS who got it early claimed it was AVC. Really weird. Guess we will have to wait till Tuesday to see who is right.

Wasn't Hellboy released in UK in MPEG2, then it was release here 6 month laters in AVC

I know that Hostel was MPEG2 in UK, and it's AVC here..

Both are from Sony BTW

The audio and subtitle tracks are different so it's definitely reauthored at least. There were some issue with the audio language selection, which they've hopefully fixed as a result.

The posterization complaint from Chad is the only really noticeable issue that I had with the French release, once I'd seen it on a proper setup, which leads me to believe that it uses the same video encode. AVC might have fixed it, but it's a relatively minor issue all told.

My copy looks really good and amazing at times. So,.. I guess I may not seek to replace it.

With regards to the AVS link I poster previously, apparently the guy didn't watch it when he said it was AVC, he went by the reviews. He now says it is MPEG-2. So it would seem it won't be very different from the French Release other then the Audio.

I saw Paprika in Best Buy on Friday! They love to put things out early there don't they?
I wish I picked it up, I was really tempted to. I will just have to wait till Christmas. I am really glad that this got such a good review. Can't wait to see it!

I'm glad this isn't a Bandai Bandit special - Blu-ray and DVD for $60. If you want the Blu-ray why would you ever need the DVD with it? On the other hand, how any people are going to want the Blu-ray if they just have DVD players? Total rip-off!

Just received my copy from Amazon and watched Paprika twice tonight and to sum it all up in one phrase, "Wow, what a ride."

The review linked to in the OP nails it right on. Paprika is pure eye candy in HD to watch. Audio is strong and clear. And the English voice track is well done. The storytelling and pace wraps you up into the movie to the point where you forget you are watching an "animated" feature.

It is because of titles like Paprika that I originally got into anime. If you are looking for a great viewing experence, this is one title I recomend you should try.

Bandai said in an interview that the reasoning behind the dvd and Blu-Ray disc or Hd-Dvd is so that you can see for yourself the difference in quality or something like that. and this is what i think if you buy it and havent got the dvd version already well you could watch it somewhere that only has a dvd player this way you wont have to worry and you could still watch it just not in high def but if you just want to show someone how great the movie is you could always do that

highdefdigest.com also did a review of Paprika Blu-Ray only got 3 and a half stars out of 5 which is ok but still if it were me it will be more like a 4.5 stars out of 5 or maybe 5 stars. one of the quotes the guy at highdefdigest.com said was you should rent this one first before you decide if this movie belongs in your collection
