Does anyone have any comments about different releases of this film, or even possibility to make some kind of comparison between them? According to Rewind the german blu from Subkultur seem to have various different versions crammed on single disc while french Artus disc is some kind of composite cut, but I haven't been able to find any more accurate information especially about the latter.

Well, I sure don't like the colour timing of the German Blu-ray as shown on Caps-a-holics. I even like the colour timing of the DVD better! I'm sure assuming, though, with the way the German Blu-ray looks, that the Arrow would hopefully be a LOT better!

The Arrow is THE must buy!! The Subkultur disc is from a very old scan and Arrow (and others) have done a great job at making the four versions much better.

I've got the Arrow, I watched the English language export version (96 mins) and wasn't that impressed, just seemed very talky with poor pacing. However, from the visuals and set pieces I think there's a better film in there.
So, from anyone who's seen them, are any of the other versions better? I'm thinking of the French cut and US cut. So is it worth giving one of those a go before deciding I don't like the film? |

I know what sort of film I was expecting.
As I say, I watched the longer cut in English language, and just didn't take to it. So those who've seen this film before, is something like the French cut better paced and worth giving a go? |

The French cut is a jumbled mess and removes a lot of stuff. The only thing worthwhile in the French is just an exclusive scene of Liselotte and Ralf walking in the city and finding a marionette display. The scene is quite cute and fits the story well, there they decide to visit the mill which explains the next scene, so I don't know why other cuts removed it. It's also quite short, like 2 mins tops. For the rest of the movie the French has scenes out of order or axed entirely. The only worthwhile cuts are the Italian and the "English Export" that were the same iirc, except the export has English text. Title/credits and shots with Italian text that were reshot with English, Ralf goofing around with a model and a letter being written. Iirc in the export a bit of Italian text slipped that appears in English in the next shot (the one with the model). So for me the "true and only" cut is the Italian. I remember making myself an "integral" cut by adding that French scene to the Italian by the way of ordered chapters in MKV (remux). Maybe I'll watch it again one of these days, loved the movie. |
