“The movie that has no limits of evil!” Bo Arne Vibenius’ revenge classic THRILLER: A CRUEL PICTURE (aka They Call Her One Eye, 1973) gets an exclusive 4K restoration and UHD/Blu combo release from Vinegar Syndrome! Legendary Swedish sexpot Christina Lindberg stars as a mute girl who’s abducted and forced into prostitution, suffering multiple indignities—including having one of her eyes poked out—before she enacts a vengeance scenario against those responsible, a plan involving martial arts, a sawed-off shotgun and lots of blood spilled in slo-mo. A stylish and violent exploitation favorite, THRILLER gets a new lease on life via Vinegar Syndrome’s UHD world debut; the company has given the film a fresh 4K restoration from its original, uncensored 16mm A/B rolls, which have never been accessed previously for any other release. They are also currently working on a slate of exclusive interviews and extras to help tell the story behind this idiosyncratic endeavor. Street date is currently slated for May 2022 -- expect more details in the new year!
Other titles on Vinegar Syndrome's 2022 roster include Krishna Shah’s aptly-named HARD ROCK ZOMBIES (1985), Michael O'Rourke’s DIY slasher MOONSTALKER (1989), Alfonsia Brescia’s sci-fi sexploiter THE BEAST IN SPACE (1980), Stelvio Massi’s obscure giallo ARABELLA THE BLACK ANGEL (1989), Alberto Cavallone’s caveman gore spectacular MASTER OF THE WORLD (1983), a UHD for Mark Goldblatt’s zombie cop buddy comedy DEAD HEAT (1988), and so much more! ![]() |

This could just be a bit of marketing fluff, and VS will actually be using the 2017 4K resto. The proposed release date of May 2022 does seem a bit quick for them to do a completely new scan and restoration. On the other hand, VS does own their own film scanner, so they may actually be one of the few labels who could pull it off. Exciting news about the making of new interviews and extras. I wonder what the next step will be, a cease and desist order from one label to the other or two competing releases? Looks like I need to stock up on popcorn. |

I honestly don't think it was even scanned in 4K by SFI back in 2016, and it was most certainly not restored in that resolution. I'm not even sure if they used the OCN as a CRI negative on 35mm is far less work and hassle to get right, which makes sense considering what kind of work they're actually doing.
The only thing I'm uncertain of is where the OCNs will be stored. It have technically belonged to SFI since forever. I have a feeling this film was scanned in Scandinavia. SFI practically never loan out their films to any right holdes for scanning or screening unless they've inspected the companies. So far there are only two companies that are allowed to scan films owned by SFI (except for SFI themselves of course) and unless the elements were donated to the new rights holder so VS could do the scan themselves, I know very well who did and what scanner they used... Or does swedish law somehow protect film materials against their creator/rights holder? |
