Default Sony 710 Model Producing True 5.1 Sound...Is this right?

I played around with my receiver as their have been alot of compliants of it playing only 2 CH sound 2.1. My display on the sony receiver reads PCM 48 on SD-DVD's, HD-DVD. and bluray, does this mean I have true 5.1 PCM sound as opposed to 2 CH. Did i do the unthinkable?

no...sorry, its not capable of Multichannel PCM. 2.0 at best.

Hit the "display" button on your BD player...it should tell you what audio format is being output.

Sup all

i have the same reciever and have it running via hdmi to my ps3. when i play a bluray with truehd or any 5.1 dts for that matter. my recevier shows pcm48and all six speakers are lit up on the reciever, also the ps3 does display that it's outputing truehd or dts. i get sound from all of my speakers, so i'm confused as why people say it can't do multi channel. can someone explain. just a little confused thanks

You have the STR-DG710...so when you select Dolby TrueHD audio track then hit "display" button and the PS3 reads "Dolby TrueHD"? (what bitrate is showing? ex. xxMbps)

even better way to check...

go into your HDMI Audio settings (auto select) and list what PCM frequencies are checked off. This will surely tell you what its capable of.

Settings - Sound Settings - Audio Output Settings

Wait so i played SD-DVD's and HD and blu and i get dolby 3/2.1 i am told that means i have 5.1 on my 710?? So do i need a 810 model or am i getting 5.1 sound now? So doesnt this mean by 710 is outputting a 5.1 channel? This shows on HD A2 and when i hit audio on the bluray remote

I would hate to hook up the 810 and have it say dolby 3/2.1 CH because if thats what 5.1 CH is then the 710 already has it..?

3 channels in the front 2 channels in the back, and the .1 channel is the LFE channel.
If it was 7.1 it would show up as 3/4.1 which would be 8 channels instead of the 6 channels with 5.1
