I'm disappointed that Criterion didn't get the massive documentary / TV debate from Les Dossiers de l'écran which is on the second disc of the French Blu-ray. That looks really interesting:

Quote:

We end this copious program with a choice piece, nothing less than the entire debate broadcast in May 1976, simultaneously with Mr. Klein's presentation at Cannes. The subject had very rarely been discussed in such a media way, it was an event that unleashed passions and even caused an invasion of the set before the show (and a forced move to another studio). This Dossier de l'écran, one of the most famous, was even parodied in Papy fait de la resistance. Exceptionally, the debate is not preceded by a fiction but introduced by a documentary (76 min) specially produced for the occasion, which traces from numerous archives and period news the journey of Pétain, hero of Verdun in 1918, "symbol of national greatness" then of French defeat, until his trial in 1945 and his death in 1951, at the age of 95.

Joseph Pasteur arbitrates the exchanges on the action of Pétain during the war: was he useful to France, could the Armistice have been avoided? On the one hand, the Marshal's defenders often evoke "intentions" and acts for which the Marshal has "nothing to be ashamed of". Among them Jacques Isorni, his lawyer in 1945, later a deputy, who often prolongs his plea here in an often intrusive and monopolizing way ("consent to the evil to avoid an even greater evil"), seeking somewhere to redo the trial. The response of the opposing camp will be based on "the facts". The entry into the matter by the former resistance fighter and Keeper of the Seals Pierre-Henri Teitgen calms the ardor of nostalgics, when he lists the anti-Jewish actions carried out under the regime and Pétain's "political and moral responsibility": "c that was collaboration!" The demonstration is supported in a very clear way by the historian Henri Michel who demonstrates methodically, often point by point, the mechanisms of the economic and military collaboration of the Vichy regime, or the way in which Hitler left the reins of the occupied countries to figures national, well seen by the populations, which thus prevented them from turning too strongly against decisions that were openly German. Henri Michel specifies that, in the other occupied countries, the deportations and dramatic facts were not applied by the national police but by the German army, contrary to France. Henri Michel brings welcome nuances, in particular on the support repeatedly reminded of the people for their leader, explaining that the French first wanted peace (not the armistice) in order not to return to combat. It is thus specified that Pétain "misled the French" whose "duty was to resist". Thirty years later, the wound of the Occupation is still alive. Far from the fiery invectives that we might have feared (even if there are some) and the passions that are still not appeased, the debate remains quite serene (we generally listen to each other), firm and very interesting, with a relevant argument.

Alain Delon has been one of those actors that is in a lot of good stuff. I'm happy that Criterion is finally bringing this one over, despite seeming like it's been forever since we found out they were.

Nice to see Joseph Losey make his Criterion debut. Now they need to get hot on some of his other titles. The Go-Between and The Servant have yet to see a stateside release. Two of his finest.

I'm more than happy with the StudioCanal UHD of THE SERVANT. And it comes in a hard slipbox, something you'd never get from Criterion.

Yeah, those 2 are great. Rumors are they do have The Servant, I believe. I think they also have Time Without Pity, which has been one of the films streaming on both their service and on HBOMax as part of their programming. It's actually my favorite Losey, and I'm thrilled to have the Indicator edition.

Maybe they haven't released any UHD's in that package but Criterion has put out stuff on rigid slipboxes before - Battle of Algiers, Seven Samurai, Godzilla '54 all were digipacks housed in a rigid slipbox.

Not on the French Blu-ray, as far as I know. I assume it would have to be subtitled, since it was originally shown on French TV, with probably no thought given to showing it to an international audience.

Yea, I snatched that one up with the quickness. I also have the Studio Canals' of Mr Klein and The Go-Between. Can't sit around waiting to see if someone will release them over here.

I think you'd be safe buying it. Even if StudioCanal do offer separate 4K rights, I doubt Kino would be interested. I have a feeling most of the major boutique labels are going to be very selective, at least for the time being, on non-genre heavy (horror), non-English speaking, world cinema UHDs or go for more popular/well-known titles.

Buy. All the Kino 4K releases so far have been very well-known English-speaking crowd-pleasers, sublicensed from MGM or Universal. I can't imagine this somber, Kafkaesque French arthouse mystery drama about Holocaust is that popular in the US.

(Remember, last year Kino Lorber revealed that Witness for the Prosecution had sold great on Blu-ray but they still didn't see it doing well on 4K so they just renewed the Blu-ray right and passed the 4K: #1 / #2)

The DVD transfer was definitely hot, and leaned red like so many DVD transfers do.. I think the comparisons to the DVD probably accentuate the differences more than just seeing it by itself, though I'm still not crazy about how desaturated it looks now as it makes Delon look like a vampire.

What is it with getting rid of red hues in these recent Criterion transfers? First it was The Girl Can't Help It, and now it it Mr. Klein!

Bring back the red hues!
