Laptop Memory Upgrade

I know this has nothing to do with blu-ray, but I thought someone here might be able to help me out quicker.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. I have recently gotten into playing World of Warcraft. (Yeah, laugh if you want. ) When it installed it said I didn't have enough RAM but that it would install it anyway since I was only short a few MBs from the minimum requirement.

The game runs smoothly 95 percent of the time but does lock up and crash at least once every time I play it. So I decided to upgrade the RAM since the lack of it is causing the problem.

Now bear with me cause as bad as I am with home theaters, I'm probably worse with computers. lol

I found the proper RAM upgrade from Dell.com but it brings up this disclaimer...

"Installation in matched pairs of modules is required, please order quantity two. Dell Branded memory offered in the Memory Selector is fully compatible and supported by Dell. Memory offered now may differ in speed from the original system memory but has been qualified to work in the system. When mixed, the memory will perform at the lowest speed populated or the highest speed allowed by the system."

Now my laptop currently has 512 MB of RAM, now does this mean since the modules have to match that I need another 512 MB card? So ordering the 1GB memory care would then be useless? And if I order the 512 MB card it would then combine the 2 and give me the 1 GB that I desire?

Sorry if this is common sense, I just don't want to order something without making sure I have the right thing.

it means you must have 2 of the same module. Right now you probably have 2 256MB sticks in there

So you'll need 2 512MB sticks. I also suggest you don't buy from Dell, they'll jack you good on the pricing. Read your manual and find out what kind you need and you can probably order from an independent dealer for half the price.

You're probably short a few MB because your laptop uses part of your RAM for video

In any case, he is correct, your comp is merely using up all your memory; and don't buy from Dell. Check your manual, see exactly what you need; but don't do it yourself. If you don't know about computers, that might be a disaster...but also don't let Best Buys Geek Squad do it! Rip off, the lot of them...I'm sure you're bound to know a friend or two who is good with computers and can do it for you.

I'd say it looks about right, if the website has already matched them to your computer. Saved you the trouble of looking up the ol' manual, eh?
