I'm writing an article about double dipping and I'd love some feedback from you guys, there are huge age gaps going way back to early media, to today's 4K.
What in your mind makes it worth your money to double dip? You can own the DVD of a film you love and then pick it up on Blu Ray for the dramatic increase of resolution, but do you jump again for 4k? Do you only upgrade certain films? What makes you spend your money again? When you own a Blu-Ray version of a film and then the 20th anniversary comes out in the same format, will you purchase it for the new 'lenticular' cover with bonus features and "new never before seen" scenes? What makes you buy it again in the same format? Is it based on quality? Is it based on FOMO? (fear of missing out) Is it a collecting problem? Do you blindly buy certain movies again and again simply because it's one of your all time favorites? Why? Thanks in advance for the input. ![]() Last edited by kyloren; 02-28-2018 at 08:28 PM. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I'm guessing I'm on the younger age of the spectrum and my growing collection (around 430+) is only Blu-Ray and 4K, I literally don't own any DVDs. When I grew up watching ET on VHS, for example, my parents picked it up on DVD when it came out and that was exciting. I then picked it up on Blu Ray years ago for my collection and also on 4k when it came out last year. Seeing movies like this, something like Jurassic Park or Gladiator coming next to 4K.... I will 100% pick it up again because these movies are at the top of my list. There are plenty of movies I really enjoyed that have already got the 4K treatment that I'll never buy again. Love it on Blu-Ray, but I don't need it again in a better format because it's good enough. Essentially my take is.... I never double dip in the same format and I only double dip in new resolutions if the movie is in the TOP of my favorites. ![]() |

The only time I really do it, is if there is a dramatically better picture quality or color timing, and I usually prefer that to be coupled with a slew of quality extras, as in say a Scream Factory collector's edition. And even then it has to be a film I really like. Occasionally I will, solely for a digibook, as I'm quite fond of them. Even less often for a steelbook.

I've doubled dipped if I've earlier bought a foreign release of a film, and it later comes out in the USA. But only if there's something different in the extras or the video is better quality.
Some films I've double dipped from blu-ray to 4K and that will only happen if I feel the video would benefit from it. Lawrence of Arabia would be one I'd do that with, but something like a Woody Allan film or a small scale comedy, wouldn't get the upgrade. |

On same format I'll double dip if a new transfer or cut comes out or if it has some new kind of extras that are worthwhile. I've also double dipped on movies I bought from overseas that ended up coming out in the US later on (like Transformers the Movie but that's only for movies I really like and I know I will watch a lot) Rarely I'll upgrade if a cool steelbook version comes out later on (again like Transformers The Movie, Super Mario Bros, or Street Fighter).
In terms of different format, from DVD to Blu-ray for almost anything I have on DVD because of the picture upgrade unless it's something I didn't really watch that much. In terms of Blu-ray to 4K I've been double dipping on movies that I really like (comic book movies, sci-fi) but I won't double dip on everything because I've been trying to cut back on buying everything under the sun. Since 4K usually comes with the Blu-ray version too, I've been able to offload some of my old Blu-ray versions. |

As I get older, I find it increasingly more difficult to double/triple dip. I try to tell myself to enjoy the version I have. I also ask, "how many more times do I see myself possibly watching it", as rewatches only take away the opportunity to watch something I never have. As my collection gets larger, it makes it even more difficult. I could have much bigger problems.

I'm 34 and have been collecting media since the VHS era. I had about 400 VHS till about 2 years ago when I donated all of them. Some I regret getting rid of. I started collecting DVD in 98 and since have accumulated over 4,000 DVDs. During this time I would double and triple dip anytime a new edition with new features or some kind of special packaging. Since then I have so with a few Blu-ray's, but not as obsessive like i did with DVD. During the DVD age and early BR days i was also single with loads more disposable income. Now with a wife and 2 kids, my spending habits have slowed and now with 4K if something comes out on 4K I usually pick it up over regular blu if the price difference isn't outrageous. Older movies that I own on Blu i will probably not upgrade unless it's for something like Star Wars.

I don't double dip as much as I did in the DVD days, like upgrading a non-anamorphic disc with an anamorphic one, different cuts etc.
I'm way more selective in the first place, I tend not to pre-order and buy when something's been out a while and there may be better versions elsewhere in the world to choose from. I have double-dipped recently, I upgraded to the 4K mastered Leon for instance, because I found the UK disc not so good quality wise. |

I rarely double dip on the same format. When I can I will double dip to upgrade a DVD to a Blu-ray, haven't took the 4K plunge yet because it's not in the budget, since I have a home theater with a projector and 4K projectors aren't cheap.

I hardly even consider a format upgrade to be a double-dip. I am finishing up upgrading all of my DVDs to Blu wherever possible, and I am about halfway through upgrading all of my VHSes to DVD or Blu wherever possible. I don't see a lot of benefit to upgrading to 4k, because most of my collection is catalog titles and they don't get many 4k releases.
But I will double-dip (that is, on the same format) for an upgraded picture... certain extras warrant a double-dip (ideally at a lower price), I like commentaries from people who were involved in the movie, deleted scenes, and especially alternate cuts... Basically, if I want to own a movie, I'd prefer to own the best version of it. Unfortunately, it looks like 2018 will be a lot more double dips released and a lot fewer upgrades, but hopefully that trend changes later in the year. I wouldn't really double dip over packaging, although there is some packaging that I dislike enough that it is sometimes tempting to double dip just to get rid of the one I don't like. |

If its
(1) an all time favorite film, and (2) new release is a collector's edition (example: GOne WIth the Wind, I owned the regular blu-ray version and then the Collector's Edition came out - big box - so I bought it so I could have that and put it on display on top shelf of movie collection> |

I'd double dip on films I like. Usually because I'm a collector, so some films I might buy different versions of the same addition. I have multiple copies of the Transformers movies because I collect the toys as well, so I go after most of the exclusives that come with some bonus figure or disc. I rarely open spare copies unless there's something different on the disc or inside the packaging.
I generally won't upgrade a movie that I'm not as big of a fan with unless the quality is a huge difference and there is at least some new bonus features. I will usually end up double dipping with Scream Factory and Arrow releases simply because they usually do include more extras and new transfers. I do try to avoid double dipping. I stopped buying horror/sci-fi catalog titles from MGM and Universal in hopes of a Shout! Factory release. It's also one of the biggest reasons I don't bother importing, as most of the movies I wanted at one point eventually got a domestic release that was just as good or better. A longer wait is worth some saved money and shelf space. My worst habit with double dipping is that I won't get rid of the older copies. I'd excuse a DVD for having "different menus from the Blu-ray". Sometimes the DVD will have extras not on the Blu-ray (My Ultimate Edition Evil Dead DVD set is pretty much in my collection to compliment my barebones Evil Dead Blu-ray). I'm sure someday I'd do a purge and get rid of some of the pointless duplicates, but right now I just feel like I need them on hand. Upgrading to UHD is a pretty tough choice for me. I'd do it for the movies I collect, but otherwise I really try to avoid it as I'm fine with Blu-ray for the most part (the biggest reason for me upgrading from DVD to Blu-ray was for additional bonus features, but UHD doesn't add new extras). I wasn't going to upgrade my Blu-ray of Jumanji, but between the new transfer, new extras, and ultimately a cool design for a Steelbook- I finally bit, and going for the UHD edition over the Remastered Blu-ray had more reason. Yet I'm not upgrading my Blu-ray of The Dark Crystal to the UHD edition as I'd rather have the Remastered Blu-ray's Digibook to go with my Labyrinth Digibook. There are just a lot of factors for me when deciding what to upgrade. |

I won't double dip for extras or new packaging, but if it's a great looking remaster of I film I love, then consider it double dipped!

I double dip on rare ocassions. Certainly not for slipcovers or steelbooks (usually)
Having said that there have been several occasions when I've gone for the HMV edition of a Ray Harryhausen or classic sci fi movie because of artcards, a booklet or as with The Time Machine a cover that replaces the original terrible release. Intended to upgrade to 4k on many titles but having discovered so many are not 4k but just upscaled 2k that's successfully knocked that one on the head so I stick with surefire genuine 4k titles only like Sony releases , Spiderman , Close Encounters etc. I won't double dip on the same format if I can help it. A new release would need to be either a significant improvement in quality or have substantial new extras. As a collector of memorabilia I have double dipped by buying steelbooks of movies I already have where the artwork is lovely - it doesn't happen too often but Forbidden Planet, Planet of the Apes and some Disney titles were very nice. And lavish special editions that Warner release with all sorts of tat in them make them essential for specific films only but that's to get the memorabilia rather than the film again. |

There was a lot of double dipping with selling my dvd collection to upgrade to blu, but I won’t be doing 4K at all
I used to double dip on PQ upgrades, but that quickly stopped when I realized I just don’t see enough difference to justify it. The only thing that gets me to double dip these days is alternate cuts. |

I double dip from DVD to Blu-Ray in most cases.
I have double dipped on some Blu-Rays. For example, bought the Universal release of The Breakfast Club, double dipped when the Criterion version came out. I plan to double dip when Paramount releases the 40th anniversary Blu-Ray of Grease, mostly because Grease 2 is included in the box set. As soon as I double dip, I take the disc I am replacing to a used CD/DVD store to try and get some money back. Often times if I know I am going to double dip, I will sell the old version first and use whatever cash I get for the new version. |
