I'm going to try to witness for myself the Great American Total Solar Eclipse that's coming up on August 21. Here's hoping the sky will be, at least, relatively clear where I'm at.
What do you think the chances are that we'll either 1) see a 4K UHD BD (preferably with HDR) of eclipse footage from all over the country and/or 2) see some similar types of film/videography of the eclipse in 4K UHD w/HDR on YouTube for us to download?? ![]() |

I plan to shoot it in 4K HDR. We'll see if I can make it work, not sure if I can adjust to luminance changes while shooting. If I can make it work you will see it on my channel.

Just wondering what that set you back? (if it's okay to ask?) I have some vintage F2 Nikon lenses, and 2 FX dslr lenses for my D800. The digital AF lenses (and inflation) make my old lenses look like cheap glass (but they're not).

From Adorama: Panasonic Lumix G Vario 100-300mm f/4.0-5.6 II Power O.I.S. Zoom Lens for Micro Four Thirds - $647.99 Lee Filters 100x100mm Solar Eclipse - $159.95 From Amazon: SIOTI 100mm Square Z series Metal Modular Filter Holder +Metal Adapter Ring for Lee Hitech Singh-Ray Cokin Z PRO 4X4" 4x5"4X5.65" Filter - $29.99 I was meaning to get this lens for a long time. The main reason for getting it is that it has Dual IS 2. Coupled with the GH5 it results in very stable images. The filter + adapter in particular were expensive and unexpected. But it seems I need it. It's highly unlikely I will recoup the money I invested in videos for the channel, but what can I say ... I like HDR. |

^ It applies to so many things, a craftsman with the right tools gets the right results.
![]() That price on the Panny lens doesn't seem that steep. Last edited by gkolb; 08-16-2017 at 03:51 AM. Reason: Spelling; darn autospell |

The step-up from the 300 lens is the 400 one. That's almost triple the price! |

I managed to film it (in V-Log L 4K 30fps 10 bit for HDR mastering). I am in the Seattle area so it only hit 93%, but I guess it's good enough. One challenge that I have is that the sun moved pretty fast so I had to adjust the angle from time to time. Once I get home I will figure out how to edit it so it looks reasonable. So expect it on my channel soon (hopefully by morning).

Here is what I managed to come up with so far. You need a YouTube HDR device to actually view it in HDR.
If you watch closely you will see that not only is the sun moving pretty rapidly, but the whole eclipse rotates. Once NASA publishes their press high resolution and high bit rate videos I will also make a video of the totality. |
